Well, ERB is being introduced to a new audience these days through an unlikely method. The new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on Netflix tackles both Land That Time Forgot and At the Earth's Core. The episodes are pretty funny, a lot of it geared towards the special effects work. I'm of the mind of any exposure these days is good exposure. I'm hoping next season they'll do People That Time Forgot. All three movies starred Doug McClure, whose birthday was yesterday. Joel McHale guest starred on the Earth's Core episode as McClure, great hair and all.

I loved the Caspak books, the first movie was pretty decent.

Okay, finished up Tarzan of the Apes today. It was a pretty good read, but I felt it started running out of steam when Porter and co. showed up in Africa, and the ending wasn't great. I also found it needlessly confusing the way every member of a specific species is referred to by the same word like it's a proper name. I was wondering for a bit if Sabor somehow survived getting skinned. XD

I was wondering for a bit if Sabor somehow survived getting skinned. XD I always enjoyed the ape language and as a kid memorized most all of it. Usha the wind, Ara the lightning, Goro the moon. Then there were Paco, Gimla, Horta and so on. I recently ordered a copy of the Whitman Tarzan of the Apes from AbeBooks with the Ape/English dictionary - it's an authorized ERB Inc hard cover edition from the mid 60s. The thing to remember is the words you are referring to (Gomangani, Histah, Tantor) are the ape word for the equivalent English. Now - why ERB chose to capitalize them as if they were a proper noun I have no idea. However, once you learn this new language you won't find it confusing. You'll soon come to recognize Numa for what it is - just another mangy, old lion.

Michael Tierney's Edgar Rice Burroughs' 100 Year Art Chronology is a gigantic project, consisting of four books: one each for the Pulps and Books, the other two for the Comics. The Kickstarter is less than a month away. This sounds fascinating, Duece. I love pet projects like this. I signed up to receive their news letter to keep up with the progress. Great interview with Tierney here: www.castaliahouse.com/a-conversation-with-michael-tierney-cirsova-author-series/The "soft" Kickstarter fired up today for those who subscribed. The main Kickstarter is tomorrow.

I recently cracked open one of my old John Carter Del Reys. It was great to revisit the 'barbaric splendour' of ERB's old Mars. I always thought REH had coined that phrase but was surprised to find ERB use it several times. ERB writes with such great facility and copious invention.
Tars Tarkas Jeddak of Thark has always been my favourite character from the Mars books. He reminds me of Conan in many ways. Like these scenes illustrate: Awesome stuff!

Ed had a way with words I find alluring to this day.

Might have to pick this up when it comes out. If you pledge now you can get the set (or an individual volume) at a discounted rate. Only $2k more to be funded to meet the goal. I went ahead and pledged the Gold Backer to get the entire set when it ships in September. It doesn't charge your card until the goal is met.
