Anyway, much of this starts to get into the religious sphere outside the scope of this thread, but if you ever want to look at some of the contemporary images of the Biblical apocalypse check out some of the work by organisations such as the Seventh Day Adventists. Thinking about it, it seems that the many headed beasts depicted by todays artists are modern interpretations of the same thing realised in old manuscripts by medieval artists. Metal AF

It will be interesting to look at the treatment of post apocalypse environments in some of the older movies.

The post apocalypse environment is one of danger and hard survival, but it can be a place of refuge too for those fleeing authoritarian rule. Take for instance the film Logan's Run from 1976 about a seemingly utopian society, in reality a dystopia under the surface, where the consumption of resources is maintained by killing everyone in an arena when they reach the age of 30 in a ceremony called the 'Carrousel'. The sacrificed are killed under the guise of being 'renewed'. The mask and uniform attire effectively dehumanizes the person.

In contrast, the ruins of the old city of Washington D.C. where our protagonists escape to is referred to as 'Sanctuary', a place where they can live as free individuals, far away from the tyranny of the sealed and orderly city where they escaped from, although they return to the domed city to present the truth to the citizens that people can live out their full lives. As a kid I found these films more disturbing than horror movies about zombies and vampires. 'I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery' Thomas Jefferson 1787

Likely they all died miserably, devoid of survival skills and incapable of surviving in the wild. Thanks, Logan.

I suppose that's one way to look at it Indeed, 'Sanctuary' was a pile of ruins, but given the options, certain death at 30 or to try and eek out an existence in whats left off the outside civilisation, I would take my chances with the outside world. I like to think that Peter Ustinov would have given the newly freed inhabitants some pointers on survival in the wastelands, not to mention some subsistence and maintenance on whatever was left of the food production in the domed city. In some ways THX 1138 from 1971 had a similar premise. In this case the populace lived in an underground city and were controlled by android police and mandatory emtion suppressing drugs. Robert Duvall is factory worker THX 1138 who eventually flees to the city limits where he escapes to the 'uninhabitable' surface world. It was a great movie, but in typical George Lucas fashion he screwed with the product years later, he loves doodling on his originals.

Diving a bit deeper on Logan's Run for folks who may not have seen it: The story is a take on Plato's Allegory of the Cave The society is built around pleasure and hedonism for a limited number of people for a limited time (age 30 I assume this system was created by the AI that runs the city, efficient but inhuman) No normal person would accept a time limit on his lifespan, Carousel is a lie to control the population, the inhabitants are taught from childhood that they are "renewed" so they don't think they are killed A few have doubts and instinctively run just as Logan has some doubts about carousel early in the movie Logan doesn't chose to run or seek freedom, the AI selects Logan to infiltrate the runners and moves his life clock up to to the limit Logan's statement to the AI during the interrogation "there is no sanctuary" is true because it doesn't exist as the cyborg "Box" has killed and frozen all the previous runners who reached that point, they are to be used as protein for the city as there is no longer plankton or seafood coming in (speculation: likely the city food systems would have collapsed or the AI would have reduced the population to compensate for less food) The AI crashes because Logan's statement simply does not compute with it's data, the city systems malfunction and the inhabitants are forced into the outside. Where they go and how they survive from there who knows. I think there are a couple more Logan books that may involve the world outside the dome but I've never read them.

I read the first Logan book, it barely has anything to do with the movie.
For me, this was a case of the movie surpassing the book

I really wanted Logan to get through to the other police enforcer 'sandmen' Francis at the end, but Francis just didn't get it, the conditioned brainwashing was too deeply ingrained, the thought of anything beyond the 'lifeclocks' was too much for him, he was losing his shit in the end. Jessica was the one that wanted to escape, but Logan came to the realisation during his mission to find 'Sanctuary' that his life as a sandman was built upon a lie. 'Logan's Run - Logan Vs. Francis'

I did like the guns the sandmen used in the books though if I'm remembering right they had ammo that had various effects, one was a tangler that fired a net and a ripper that inflicted bloody wounds can't remember any of the others.

One of my favourite post apocalypse chase scenes where the truck/tanker is used as a decoy.
Mad Max 2 - The Chase Is On
I dedicate this to all the truckers and road warriors of freedom.

Somebody cobbled up a Deep Sleep gun that combined the novel version and the movie version. I'll try to locate it again. I'll throw this out here. The TV show wasn't bad either. Cool cars, cool story ideas, Donald Moffat, a little side boob from Heather Menzies.

I liked the Planet of the Apes tv show and the cartoon. While I'm on the subject of classic Planet of the Apes check out the intriguing post apocalyptic style of the Church of the Bomb from Beneath the Planet of the Apes.
