Then only chance is if comics on newsstands make a major comeback like they did prior to the late 90s. The direct market alone couldn't support this. You'd have to go after an audience that enjoys fantasy and heavy metal who have never set foot in a comic shop. There are many people who don't even realize new comics are being produced. But yeah, if they're having a tough time selling a Conan color comic, a black and white mature title is a heavy lift. Well I did actually shoot an email to the people at Marvel/CtB (Which was actually printed in one of the issues) and asked if they planned on bringing back a B&W title. This was their response. Vague but it shows that it was considered: View AttachmentNice, way to get them on the record. Hopefully something happens beyond special edition b&w trade paperbacks.

These are just some thoughts from me on the topic. Feel free to shoot any of them down if you disagree. I agree with everything you said, and your analysis is pretty spot-on. Marvel has to realize, and I think they are start to do so, that a Conan title can't be treated like a "wait for the trade" super hero title with 6 or even 12 part stories. I think they also have to realize it's no use making Conan a pc book as that's not the audience who would even buy it in the first place. They really just need to read the Busiek and Truman runs at Dark Horse and use those as templates to get Conan back to his best.

I agree. The artists have only improved and although it is a lot different than what I was expecting from Marvel, it wasn't necessarily bad. However, they did change the character a little more than I would have liked them to (they essentially watered him down to appeal to a wider audience) but they should realize that Conan is not supposed to appeal to everybody and they need to treat him the way foreign companies like Glenat are. I'll definitely still read the Conan comics from Marvel.

Aye, we've had great stuff from Busiek and Truman, though DH did seem to stumble after the change of editors mid RoK. Truman weaved some inspired connections into his Wolves Beyond the Border adaptation.

Definitely. I like how Truman referenced Balthus' sword in Wolves Beyond the Border. The Marvel SSOC adaptation of beyond the black river was one of the first Conan tales i've ever read, since I was about 10, and it remains one of my favorite stories to date.
I've owned the entire Busiek/Nord run for a while and also most of RoK, a couple issues of the Truman/Giorello run and also the complete run of Conan the Avenger. At first I overlooked everything from Dark horse because I honestly didn't like some of the artwork (Like how Brian Ching turned Conan into a stick figure, Ching has talent like in series like Witchblade but I didn't initially like his work on Conan). When I started to read them however, I started and finished every single issue in the main DH run (Conan, COnan the Cimmerian, Conan the Barbarian, RoK, Conan the Avenger, Conan the slayer) all in one month. And all issues of DH's King Conan promptly after that.
Dark Horse did a wonderful job. They analyzed their mistakes and feedback and improved impeccably. I see Marvel seemingly following the same trend now and I will always anticipate Conan Comics.

The problem with DH was by the time they got everything back in place (both solid writing and art), it was over three years later and the audience was gone. We’ll have to see once things get going again how Zun continues his run and how the King Conan series develops. Frankly I’d be perfectly fine if Marvel brought Tim and Tomas in after Aaron to do the Black & Red trilogy but that’s just not going to happen so I’ll just hope the stories and art are enjoyable.
