I have always had the impression that Howard gave his Hiborian Picts some characteristics of native Indians, in terms of arranging a primitive society that is literally on the verge of the Stone Age, and the influence of frontier stories on his writing about them is indisputable. But it is absolutely impossible for me to imagine them as the Iroquois or any other tribe. I repeat once again, picts would be best portrayed as vendols from 13 Warrior - they are certainly reminiscent of a prehistoric tribe that lasted until recently, they are not exactly white, they are brutal and exactly what we need for the Conan TV series. And I believe that someone else here would agree with me. As for the representation of individual races, history is full of beastly examples when it comes to any race, regardless of skin color, religion or nation - there are no good and bad, mostly all (to some extent) are bad ... The history of mankind is written blood. I am a white man, who rarely in many old or new films, when it comes to the clash of cultures, cheers for the white people, which are often portrayed as bad guys or conquerors. On the other hand, let's not forget the Mongol invasion of Europe (my county long ago fought with them in the Middle Ages and defeated them on a couple of occasions), the jihad of the Ottoman Turks (that's where the imperial ambitions of Howard's Turanians come from), let's not forget the cannibalistic tribes of Africa, nor Viking incursions and conquests ... Should any of us across the world feel offended if someone in the film shows exactly what our ancestors did? That's stupid. Interracial hatred, although a great evil, has been present in the world for millennia, religious fanaticism as well, and what not. I am a Christian, and I often enjoy the movie Kingdom of Heaven, where Europeans and Christians are bad guys. Was I offended by that? No way! Skin color and faith do not make us good or bad people. Our beliefs, code and honor (less and less present in man today) if what makes us. The world viewed through pink glasses, the sun and the rainbow, belong to Disney fairy tales, not in the hyborian age. In the end, I don't understand so much concern of individuals about receiving this series ... GoT was anything but a politically correct story, and the world still went crazy for it. When they finally started looking at correctness and other nonsense, the series lost a lot of its quality. I wouldn't want that to happen to Conan. All the more so because Conan is the Essential Antithesis to everything that angry minorities are trying to impose on modern society today. All this does not mean that certain races should be presented as primordially evil - this isnt childish, but a realistic story despite its surreal milieu in which it takes place. A skilled writer / screenwriter can present all that without again dividing anyone into good and bad guys. On one side they are always evil and good, and on the other good and evil. This is how the human world has been functioning since it existed. I'm that someone else that would agree with you, and I know what you mean with the Vendols from the 13th Warrior movie. I also imagine a very violent and primal prehistoric people that probably evolved from a cruel and brutal strain of apish or Neanderthal ancestors. In appearance I would make the Picts look a little like the attacking Getae Thracians from the Spartacus series. The Hyborian age Picts may have some of the worst aspects and attributes of tribal Europeans and Comanche or Iroquois, but are a prehistoric people in their own right. The above is probably a little over the top, just a little. Remember the movie Pathfinder and how the Viking protagonist takes up with a native American tribe, and how the other Vikings are portrayed as murderous raiders whilst the natives are portrayed as wise and compassionate. In reality Vikings were just as much traders and colonists as they were pirates, but it worked playing from a certain angle in the movie. We had to imagine that particular band of Vikings were the worst of the bunch. In the case of the Hyborian Age Picts I wouldn’t want the audience to relate to them as just another tribe of people, I want the viewers to be disturbed by them, even have nightmares about them if possible. There are many films and series that deal with the plights of the disenfranchised, minorities and social justice themes, but a Conan series should not be one of them. It’s a different vehicle.

I want my Picts in a Netflix Conan series to be savages in need of killing by Conan. I don’t want the Hyborian world viewed with pink glasses and turned into a representation of our current social political climate. The Hyborian age people were tough as nails, even the decadent denizens of Shadizar would call a plague a plague only when they saw many people getting sick and dying around them, they would have thought us mad if we talked about ‘positive cases’ and ‘tests’. Conan's time should reflect some of the characteristics of people from centuries past, not the ‘sensitivities’ of our ‘cancel culture’. That’s my ideal for the series, I know that in reality there would be some give, but I think they should strive for that spirit, use that as template for Conan’s world.

He does have a unique vision that runs through his work. Whether it's the right fit is another question. Something closer to Dawn of the Dead or 300 rather than his later films.

I think he could give us a good hyborian age with his style (dark, Dante’s inferno). And I really liked his Watchmen movie so we know he can follow original material so that’s a plus. I just don’t know who I personally would want to spearhead this project. I just hope whoever it is has great vision and can see the potential of bringing REH’s work to the screen.

... a little bit of info concerning the upcoming series, well really not that much... at least we know it is not in Development Hell or to the Fridge as they say in Brazil.
We should find out a little bit more in the upcoming Fórum Conan o Bárbaro interview with Fredrik Malmberg.

Ok that at least sounds like it’s...moving. How fast and how far? Who knows. Howard Days would be a great place to do a semi full roll out, or at least around then. If we don’t hear anything after that...put the worry cap back on ( though the deal is SO wide ranging I can’t imagine they’d drop it like that).

What do they say , can't say I'm bothered to watch all of the video ? If you click on the video it should start at the bit where they talk about the series at Netflix (around the 40min 30sec mark). Jim Zub don't really say that much, just that the series is not stuck in Development Hell. Good news, I guess. Hopefully, Malmberg can clarify the situation in the upcoming interview at the same YouTube channel (Fórum Conan o Bárbaro) or at Howard Days this year.

I don't know much about the lingo, the only thing I know about "development hell" is that's what happened to that Terry Gilliam movie about Don Quixote. So that's good, but not totally reassuring. Thanks for the info, looking forward to seeing how it progresses!

It would be interesting to try and get a handle on how women would be portrayed in a Netflix series based on REH's Conan. After all, REH wrote of nubile dancers, maidens in need of rescue, but he also gave us warrior women such as Valeria, and of course he created the swordswoman Dark Agnes.
History and folklore is full of examples of strong and powerful women, warriors and rulers, but it also has its more than fair share of slaves, sell skirts and women in need of rescue by strong men, and the audience should be given this full spectrum and treatment.

They seem to have found the Conan show runner. Plus the Solomon Kane series is planned:

Good find BlackHeart. It is reassuring to know that the Netflix Conan project continues to move along into development.
