This guy sums up the situation best, casting is all about "agenda", and not about finding an actor that is best suited for a role. An absolute asinine fuss over nothing. This kind of attitude is an inhibitor of creativity. Obviously the hair and costume department can certainly create red hair. Hannah John-Kamen is a great actress, in both action and dramatic roles. Looking forward to seeing her portraying Red Sonja.

This shouldn't be a surprise to anybody. It should be obvious that Hollywood wants to avoid casting white people in positive roles as much as possible, especially those marketed toward the younger generation (indoctrination). It's been a slow, steady gradual movement that synchronizes with all the rest of anti-white politics going on according to the agenda by the mainstream media, dems and social media overlords- critical race theory, excluding white people from certain benefits (Oakland, farmers), white privilege checklists for employees(Disney), mass censorship of conservatives, attack on traditional family values/Christianity (Equality Act), attack on private schools, ect. The list goes on and on. Nobody should be expecting anything less at this point. Anti-white Yeah if only I could think of some white lead characters in films.... Anyway, the comic book character was a Hyrkanian but was "cast" as a white person, was that an issue for you? Christianity? What colour do you think Adam and Eve were? Or Jesus, come to that? Yeah, I feel the casting for good ol' Red is a funny one. Cos in the original REH yarn she is obviously Slavic, and hates her sister Roxelana (also known as Hürrem Sultan by the Ottomans) the wife of Süleyman the Magnificent. I think this caused a slight problem for Roy Thomas in the Conanized Marvel comics adaptation. The Hyrkanians are not described as red haired by REH in the Hyborian Age or in the Conan yarns. But very much like the Turkic & Mongols today they are a Eurasian people bound by linguistic and cultural ties, but, importantly, they are not a race. The reason I posted the photos of Turkic & Mongol women above is to demonstrate that they all look different and even though they still share those very linguistic and cultural ties that go back millennia: nevertheless, they all look different. As far as I'm concerned for Hannah John-Kamen to be cast in this role is not problematic for a movie like this - the real concern is can they create a modern Sword & Sorcery movie that is relevant? Something that can create some kind of momentum for movies, TV series and animations for the (still keeping my fingers crossed this stuff) upcoming Conan and Solomon Kane series expected at Netflix?

She'll likely do a good job. The story she'll be acting in...well...based on the few things so far, I'm really not optimistic. But there's always room for surprise.
If they come up with a story that explains (heck, even mentions) her redheadedness in an area with people with generally dark complextions by invoking possible Vanir ancestry, I'll be impressed. Come to think of it, has anyone ever tried that in the comics? It'd explain a lot.

I think it can be described as a trend. It will not be permanent. What's wrong if we get an Actress of African/European heritage to be Red Sonja? Or a black Superman? Or perhaps an Asian Superman? The original, iconic version will not be forgotten, we've had the same stuff for 9 decades now, it can't be that much of a problem if they decide to have a black actor portray Superman in a movie. Look at all the fuss about Jane Foster as Thor a few years ago, where is she now? The real Thor has unsurprisingly returned, I think he has the Power Cosmic in the Cates run, do I care? Not really, that's just the stuff that happens in comics. Jane Foster will probably become Thor in the next movie. So What? I guarantee ya, Thor will come back, even on the silver screen.

Depends what you do with the story. You come up with a story people like, it'll be fine. Talk down to the audience, you'll alienate them in a hurry. Marvel has done a pretty good job at making a change or adding a character, but found a way to make the story and characters interesting enough that they take a life of their own. Heck, bringing Bucky back from the dead shouldn't have worked but it did. Miles Morales had a bit of a bumpy road at first when he specifically took Peter's place. But then when they came up with the way to have them both, albeit alternate universes, it allowed him to be his own character. Same with Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan, Jane taking over for Thor and Sam becoming Cap (though in all honesty the show came thisclose to being an MST3K parody in the last episode but pulled itself back and ended on a high note. I think they used Isiah better on the show than the comics). Tell a good story and let the audience embrace the character. Tell them you have to like it or you have a problem...it doesn't always end well.

Hun, your points are right/I agree, and maybe I'm not expressing myself properly? My point is with the current trend of race/gender swapping iconic characters is that "race swapping" seems to be the extent of the change. It's not about a different take on the character, it's not a fresh angle on the story, it's not about making a good movie, the priority is the predetermined agenda of these producers, directors, etc., that they are going to put race over everything else, which IMO is racist in itself?

Yeah, I agree with a great deal of what you are saying. Those that have power within the entertainment industry are deciding what is good for people that are not of western European descent! That is the primary problem! All cultures have a universal understanding of heroism and have the potential to create epic stories inspired by their cultural heritage. Unfortunately, the likes of Disney, Marvel, WB and all the rest just don't get it! There is nothing wrong with Hannah John-Kamen as Red Sonja or even a Black Superman. But, it is of primary importance, that eventually, minorities in the English speaking world create their own legends, and resist the manipulation of the giants in the industry.

I'd rather have Hannah than some model/cosplay/wrestler that is the splitting image of the comic version who'll probably "act" like a block of wood, hi Arnie LOL! Anyway , hardly new Michael Clarke Duncan played a fine Wilson Fisk nearly 20 years ago!

Anyway , hardly new Michael Clarke Duncan played a fine Wilson Fisk nearly 20 years ago! And was really good, probably the best part of the movie! (And I like DD way more than 95% of people). Scary thing is now you might get in trouble for doing that role that way Though when you think about, the wrestlers these days have had so much acting training, they get to the movies and fit right in!

Yes he was really good. I liked the film , at least back then LOL , the extended version is better. Haven't watched the wrestling for about 15 years since the lad was really into it and we went to a couple of shows when they came over here and some of them were pretty damn good at what they did.

What's wrong if we get black Conan? With Conan they have to at least present REH's version on screen first, if we get 80 years of REH's Conan after the Netflix deal why not? I'd prefer an accurate depiction of Sonya from REH's Shadow of the Vulture. But with a Red Sonja movie based on the comic books, I'm willing to be a little more flexible about the casting. Superman has been on screen and in cartoons for years, if they wanna try something different now, I don't mind.
