The real question is-will MJ change the actress and the screenwriter? The poster behind her says that she is a screenwriter, which implies that this is a completely new project. If so, then Hana falls away too. I think the two would have to meet and talk about the project. Was Hanna drawn to it because of the character or the specific approach? She'd likely stay on in the former case if she matches what MJ has in mind or depart immediately if it's the latter. Specific approach would be an answer to that. Millennium chose Soloway to clean the controversy with Bryan Singer, not because she is a good director or experienced in action films. Tasha Huo was chosen as a screenwriter in a similar way, and cast of black actress for the role of Sonja was the next logical step for the team formed around the political agenda, and not because of their qualifications for this job or knowledge about the character. I am sure Bassett could find an actress who, unlike Hannah, looks like Sonja, and her action scenes would surely look attractive and convincing which is much more important in this kind of movie than the acting skills of the lead actress. I mean, its not a hard choice. Hannah could play in the movie too - some evil, spolied princess from Kush. So, I am more worried about the specific approach and also-the Gail Simone involvement.
Given that Bassett is a transgender person, I don't know if she wants to use this film, or Sonja's character, to send some messages about it, to insert modern politics into the Hyborian age and world in the same wrong way as Soloway and Huo are trying to do.
If Gail's parody of Sonja's character stays inside the script, that is disaster too.
So, if that's the case, even if Bassett changes the lead actress, and makes good choice with the casting, that will be the same crap, just inside the better looking cake.
But, it is too early for any conclusions - we do not know anything except this announcement, even the Millennium films did not issue an official announcement.

None of those gals pictured look like they split skulls on the regular.
They should cast some MMA fighter or Crossfit games competitor who can act decently.

That's more in line with how the character SHOULD be (just get Gina to give her some acting lesson with the hair dye). Despite MJ's personal situation, haven't seen any evidence it's worked its way into what shows up on the screen. I would expect Red Sonja not to be any different, so Mother Earth may have lost a specific protector (maybe RS will make sure she throws her trash in a Hyborian receptacle).

Cute girl, but too muscular, too short and flat-chasted for Sonja. And Latina.
But she should be in the movie as some female warrior-she has the look and definitely the right attitude.

Has to be tough, but not crazy built, needs to be tall and sexy and look like Red Sonja from the comics. Yes, that is the best description how she should like. She should not have the body of a bodybuilder or MMA/UF fighter because she does not look like that in comics and illustrations.
Her strength is a gift from her patron, Red Goddess.

What about Cemre Gümeli from the Turkish series Barbaros? I always imagined Red Sonja as one of those far eastern European/Turkic red heads that crops up in a few places. I like her facial features, just give her red hair.

What about Cemre Gümeli from the Turkish series Barbaros? Very good suggestion, but I prefer Elçin Sangu, Turkish actress of Circassian descent, because she has classic Slav look. Yes, she is tiny and not so young, but she has Red Sonja face right from the comics.

IMO, Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil, Monster Hunter) would be perfect:

IMO, Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil, Monster Hunter) would be perfect: Definitely has enough killing in her film background for the resume, she just has a couple of things missing to make an effective Sonja...

RED SONJA IS LOOKING FOR A NEW STAR AFTER HANNAH JOHN-KAMEN FALLS OUT: EXCLUSIVEPosted by Kevin Fenix | Mar 8, 2022 | Exclusives, Fantasy, Movies | Red Sonja is looking for a new lead after the original actress, Hannah John-Kamen, fell out.
The warrior woman out of majestic Hyrkania, Red Sonja, is a fictional character written for Marvel Comics’ Conan the Barbarian comic in the early 1970s. She was powerful enough to go toe to toe with Conan and deny his advances. Her popularity led to her own book that is still publishing issues to this day at Dynamite Comics. She has appeared in the Conan the Adventurer series, her own live-action film in 1985, and an animated film in 2016.
Red Sonja, despite only having only a few movie and television appearances has a pretty big presence in comic book circles. The “she-devil with a sword” is nearing her 50-year publication history, She headlines numerous books, a series of novels, and has had a number of notable team-ups, including ones with Spider-Man and Wolverine. With so many comic books being brought to movies and television, her popularity makes her a natural choice. This is why it was no surprise when Millenium Pictures announced in 2017 they would be making a new live-action film of the heroine.
MILLENIUM PICTURES’ RED SONJA LIVE-ACTION FILM ANNOUNCEMENT WAS 5 YEARS AGO…
There have been a lot of changes in the production since its initial announcement. Last year, the film appeared to have solid footing with Joel Soloway set to direct and co-write the film with Tasha Huo. The film also was said to have Hannah John-Kamen starring as Red Sonja according to The Hollywood Reporter. We even reported that Sacha Baron Cohen was previously offered the role of Kulan Garth. Things seemed to be in place for production to start filming later this year.
Unfortunately, things change. Sadly, our sources say that Hannah John-Kamen has fallen out from the film and the production team is looking to cast a new actress for the lead role of Red Sonja. Casting is open to anyone from anywhere, and ideally, she is 5′ 8″ or taller. But the most important aspect for the role is the ability to perform action sequences, as action is crucial to the role. The news is disheartening as John-Kamen’s action chops are top-tier and it would have been amazing to see her down fantastical villains and beasts. But it seems that it just didn’t work out.
To pile on, not only did Red Sonja lose its lead, but it also lost Joel Soloway as director. Fortunately, M.J. Bassett is in place to take over. This makes her the third director attached to Millenium Pictures’ film. With production set to begin in May of this year, Millenium Pictures and Bassett are sure to be eager to assemble their cast and team. While fans are likely disappointed, production shakeups are fairly normal in Hollywood. And with production set to start in months, we’re sure there will be a lot more news about the production coming soon.Source: www.theilluminerdi.com/2022/03/08/red-sonja-new-lead-search/
