Not a surprise in the least. I suspect she wanted to play THAT particular version of Res Sonja, which may not have been similar to the character in a lot of respects. Or it could’ve been scheduling conflicts, what do I know?

Can't say that I'm disappointed about Hannah John Kamen dropping out of the project, she's fantastic, but I never could accept her as the Red Sonja from the comics. I mean no one could actually look like that, but Hannah even less so.

I'm little concerned that Tasha Huo still appears to be involved with the writing (at least it seems that way in the link below), hopefully, MJ Bassett will replace Tasha Huo as writer. They better sort out the replacement for Hannah John-Kamen with an actress that looks a little more like the Red Sonja in the comics.

IMO, Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil, Monster Hunter) would be perfect: Mila is great in action scenes, she has Sonja's face,
she is a good actress, she has Slav origin (Serbian-Russian), so although she lacks curves for the chain-maili bikini, she would be good pick some 20 years ago-when she was young and before she became a trademark of Resident Evil movie franchise.

Icelandic actress Ragga Ragnars would make a powerful and statuesque Red Sonja. She recently starred as Gunnhild on the TV series Vikings.

You have a badass redheaded woman with a sword in a chainmail bikini wandering around a prehistoric world having adventures. How hard can it be to make a decent movie with this premise? The appeal is so simple it eludes them.

The appeal is so simple it eludes them. Thing is they couldn't get it right when they had the wind at their backs in the 80s, they stumbled a little closer in the 90s on the Conan TV show. But today, you'd have people hyperventilating at that description, now try to make a movie of it? That's partially why the previous creative team looked to take a "different" approach, and thankfully it looks like that's fallen by the wayside to some degree.

Based on MJ Bassett's (previous and current projects), she seems to have a handle on action/adventure, and more importantly she doesn't seem to be part of the current trend of writers/directors/producers "shoehorning an agenda" into a project.

Is it a little too much to hope for something akin to a 'Shadow of the Vulture' adaptation set in the Hyborian Age?

Good idea , both the J and Y fans might be happy with that!
