They should keep well away from the origin found in the old Marvel comics.

They should keep well away from the origin found in the old Marvel comics. Keep it and put it in the trailer, set it to the chorus of this song and print $$$$

Sonja did not gain her powers through rape, but through an agreement with the Goddess.
But it came at a price.
My point is - if Sonja is shown in the movie without her legendary costume and without her origin - what will be left of her? Just red hair?
After she was raped. Why not before? So we basically have a woman with supernatural powers? Is that how her bikini armour protects her? What makes her different from Wonder Woman? Again, I'd prefer something more gritty a la REH than this superhero approach.

I suppose in some ways it's sad how the Red Sonja character is sexualised so. The whole thing about being drawn so sexy with the chain mail bikini, but unattainable at the same time, the rape origin story, and the not being with a man unless he has beaten her in a fight.
Maybe that's why I always preferred warrior women such as Valeria and Belit, they can be sexy, but sex is a side element to their character, they can shag if they want to, or not, without that being paramount, whereas Red is defined by it to a strong degree.
Maybe I would look for inspiration from gritty westerns from the 60's and 70's, a violent rape, add a revenge motive, an ending where the man that defeats her in a fight rejects her as damaged goods, leaving Red to behead him in a frenzied attack thus freeing Sonja to continue her sojourn as the premier swordswoman of the Hyborian Age.

After she was raped. Why not before? Because gods do not give such powers for free. Especially not the Hyborian gods.
I would not call it supernatural powers, at least not in terms of powers of some superhero:
As far as I remember, that was not stated in any of her episodes, but it is logical to conclude that Sonja's armor has some kind of magical properties because is was a gift from her patron Goddess. It is well known from ancient legends and fairy tales that the gods often endow their chosen heroes with magical weapons, armors, horses or other objects that will help them accomplish their mission or tasks.
Her origin. Tragic past, the way she gained her powers. Her origin, not the powers she has acquired, shaped her character. She has special compassion for orphans and for women who are threatened with rape or have been raped, because of her personal tragedy she is sometimes too cruel to her enemies, due to heir oath she often has internal conflict, dilemmas, re-examinations.
Besides, Sonja was born as a human, the Goddess did not create her, she only gave her great warrior skills and strength. WW was creation of gods, she was sculpted from clay and brought to life by the magic of the gods and born as a daughter of Zeus in rebooted version, so WW is some kind of demigoddess.
Me too, Red Sonja movie should look exactly like that, because her bloody and tragic origin/past/warrior life are just like that, not super heroic. So I hope Bassett will not make a mistake and decide to copy WW or Captain Marvel movies in his approach, to make a family-friendly movie for the widest audience which means to deprive his lead character of all main features that make her special and unique and to exclude anything that might offend or shock someone.
Good news. MJ is finally on the way to Europe.
Now let's see which actress MJ chose and what her vision of Red Sonja will look like.

Thanks for the update Hyrkanian.
I unfortunately disagree with you concerning Red Sonja's origin. I guess it really don't make a difference, it is all in the hands of MJ Bassett now.
I just hope we get a half decent movie (without the comic book origin) set in a world that resembles REH's Hyborian Age.

See, that's what all makes it feel more like a superhero or generic fantasy character than REH's Hyborian Age. Magic armour, abilities granted by a supernatural being and a hokey origin story and costume. A magic bikini? No thanks.

I wouldn't mind if Sonja's origin is left out in the first movie, but I'm against changing it or inventing new origin, as she did with Solomon Kane.

I wouldn't like to see the movie with Sonja the superhero/generic fantasy character the way you see her either, because such Sonja does not exist.

Yes, legendary EP.
Anyway, Bassett should hire Klaus Badelt again. His music in SK was epic.

I really dig this fan film concept take on Red Sonja. The actress looks tough, beautiful, dangerous, love her expression.

Why is the "bad guy" wearing cargo pants and sneakers? Must be one of Yezdigerd's guys, I think they were the only Hyborian warriors to wear cargo pants and sneakers.
