I'm still very critical. She doesn't look the part at all to me. Sonja is curvy, tall, mature. The actress has a "young girl" vibe with non-curvy, young-girl features. Maybe I can ignore that, if the film is good. I didn't care that James Bond had blonde hair because Daniel Craig was so good in the part, and Casino Royale is a damn fine movie. Fingers crossed, but not expecting to be happy. It is interesting we don't get a front shot but a sort of over the shoulder partial side.

A front shot would only invite people to place it side by side with something like this: It would be shades of Yancy Butler from the Witchblade television series back in the day. A good looking woman compared to a unrealistic comic book character.

Again, if this happened during a different era I would not be as critical. It's just not a coincidence that this syncs up with "big breasted sexy women = male objectivity/gaze" garbage. It's like they looked for the flattest women they could find and with it, probably alienated 70% of potential ticket-buyers and gained 10% purple-haired women. I guarantee, a stylish, sexy ultra-violent R-rated Red Sonja in the vein of Spartacus or Suckerpunch with a Metal/Techno soundtrack would sell far more than whatever this calcified dog turd is going to do. HEAVING SWEATY, GLISTENING BREASTS cupped in a too-small swath of chain mail with blood spatters like modern art all over them should be the movie poster. and that would be all you need to know.

Finally something official but......
This image doesn't reveal much new except of guards on her arms, and doesn’t inspire much confidence either.
In the photos from the set we already saw the ordinary hairstyle and wrong hair color she will wear in the movie as well as this strange looking, short sword. Yes, I understand, Matilda is tiny and short so she has to carry short sword - with original, long and big Red Sonja sword she would look ridiculous, but these are limitations that you get when you make the wrong choice of the lead actress. Those shoulder and wrist guards looks strange-like parts of а modern armor from some Marvel/DC superhero movies, or at best like parts of the armor of some medieval knight. Not like well known shoulder guards from Sonja’s original chain-mail bikini armor or like wrist guards she (very rarely) wears.
I've read a lot of comments where people complain about this Millennium choice of RS image for not showing the full figure of Matilda in armor,
but I perfectly understand such a move from the company. They know that fans will be disappointed that Sonja will not wear her iconic chain-mail bikini in the movie (its obvious that's not going to happen)
so they will probably show the full figure in their version of RS costume in the teaser for the movie only.
If the teaser looks good, it will alleviate the negative reaction of the fans due to the fact that Sonja will not look the way they are used to.

I don't think Matilda and the words full figure go together

5 foot 6 and a half according to imdb. Short, skinny with brown hair...yep, nailed Sonja to a T.

She’s cute holding a sword. Give her a bustier under her armor and she’ll be fine!

Look at those long, skinny legs. This chick is a warrior? I remember how Linda Hamilton bulked up and was cut for Terminator 2. She wanted to sell what a bad-ass the character had become. Who is going to believe that the above is a woman so good with a sword that not even Conan can best her? Man, I hope she can act.

Hey, maybe we can get Christopher Mintz-Plasse--you know, "McLovin"--to play Conan in the next Conan attempt.

Matilda Lutz looks good in the promo poster. I'd imagine she's developed a physique suitable for the role. Thankfully, even the story, what little I've managed to find out about it online, seems to be along the lines of Shadow of the Vulture, if you think about it. Her sister/half sister Dark Annisia (Hurrem Sultan) is either married to Draygan the Magnificent (Suleyman the Magnificent) or at least Dark Annisia's some sort of an ally. Red Sonja (Sonya) will fight against the expansion of Draygan's Zamoran Empire east of the Vilayet Sea instead of the Ottoman expansion west to Vienna. Hopefully, MJ Bassett can portray that convincingly on screen and we get a half decent movie this time round based on an REH character.

Red Sonja production is moving full steam ahead. However, the Millennium Media film has undergone a new bit of casting with the addition of Rhona Mitra amid the departure of Oliver Trevena. This is not the first time the project has undergone a cast shift. The Red Sonja film was originally set to be led by Hannah John-Kamen before she, too, had to leave the film due to scheduling conflicts. The role of Red Sonja eventually went to actress Matilda Lutz instead. Joining her in the film is Robert Sheehan, who will be portraying Draygan, and Wallis Day, who will be portraying Sonja's villainous half-sister Dark Annisia. The plot of the movie is currently unknown. As reported by Deadline, Trevena, known for his work on Wire Room, has had to depart the project due to scheduling conflicts. The role that Trevena would have portrayed is not specified. Meanwhile, actress Mitra, known for her work on Hounds of War, has signed on to the film in an unspecified role. Red Sonja recently released a first-look photo that showcases Lutz's portrayal of the character. It was the best look at the film so far, but even the photo was shrouded in secrecy and raised more questions than it answered. It seems that Millennium Media is keeping the film under wraps as best it can before it releases. Fans can only speculate as to whether Trevena's departure and Mitra's signing on to Red Sonja are related. They may be playing entirely separate characters, but it is possible that Mitra may be playing a gender-swapped version of whatever character Trevena would have played. Red Sonja, a creation of Robert E. Howard (and later adapted for comics by Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith) has plenty of supporting characters that can be brought along to the big screen. Howard constructed an entire world for the Red Sonja film to play around in. There had previously been a Red Sonja film adaptation back in 1985 that starred Brigitte Nielsen in the title role and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the villainous Lord Kalidor, but the film performed poorly and won several Razzie Awards (which are awards given out for films considered to be terrible; basically the antithesis to the Oscars). This Red Sonja adaptation looks like it aims to be more loyal to the source material, but only time can tell if it succeeds on a critical and commercial level. gamerant.com/red-sonja-movie-rhona-mitra-cast-oliver-trevena-exit/

Reading the above, I like that the film is based on Howard's original works. And, an adaptation of Shadow of the Vulture to the Hyborian Age has a fine tradition, with Roy Thomas in the Marvel comics, L. Sprague de Camp in the ACE novels, and even the more recent Dark Horse comics.
So, I'm good with that.
I'm wondering. When did the storyline get changed or added that Sonja's parents were killed by bandits, Sonja was raped and left for dead as a young girl, but she survived and empowered by her god?
I've read the early appearances of Sonja in the Conan mags, but I haven't read the Red Sonja single title Marvel stuff. Is that She-Devil with a sword stuff Marvel? Or was that added later, with Dynamite?
Maybe it's in the Smith/Tierney Red Sonja novels?
Anybody know?
Anyhow, it doesn't seem like that will be a part of the film, since it wasn't Howard's creation (still, we're talking about an adaptation, like Roy Thomas did, when Sonya became Sonja).
