It's a sorry state of affairs if we have to rely on a CGI overlay to cover obvious set and costume weaknesses. In that case the CGI must be top notch to avoid the 'this looks fake' routine. Of course the CGI will not be able to cover bad performance and casting, or a weak script and story. I guess we will find out soon enough.

Falls into the “we’ll fix it in post” category.

This looks like a cheap medieval age made for TV movie. Basset probably had a way smaller budget for Solomon Kane and that looked way better.

Ooof. My expectations were not the greatest to begin with, but this just looks cheap. I'm having '90s TV flashbacks looking at the costuming and sets. It gives the distinct impression that the studio was not willing to risk a whole lot on the project, which doesn't bode well.

Judging a film on its looks before all the post-production and CGI etc goes in, is a bit like, well.... judging a film on its looks before all the post-production and CGI etc goes in. Do you think they’ll have the budget to improve this greatly? It’s not like it’s 100% green screen where we really don’t know what they have in mind.. This is the general look they’re going for. Maybe the lighting for the film will help on screen. It just doesn’t look as impressive as something like Beastmaster, which wasn’t high budget but ended up being well shot and had interesting sets. It looks like they tried to make do with whatever budget they had, which is why you probably have all these styles mixed together. I don't know. I mean, here's a set photo from LOTR by way of comparison. I'm not particularly convinced by the whole idea in the first place, TBH. I don't think it's an established or strong enough character to deliver a decent film from. I mean, magic chain mail bikini warrior virtually screams a "Xena!" type movie anyway.

Well this wasn't supposed to be an exotic location shot, so they probably got what they wanted! The story is there for a decent enough movie, if it was good enough for Raquel Welch in Hannie Caulder in 1972...

I don't have good eyes for this stuff... sometimes after I've seen a movie I've loved I've seen behind the scenes, props, costumes, etc., and thought... "that looks cheap", in a "how did they make it look so good in the film" sort of way, so I don't feel like I can judge the costumes or set based on the pics we've seen.
Red Sonja's never been a huge favorite and I've only had mild interest, but this is settling into "watch it on streaming w/ a few beers when spouse out of town" territory for me.
Heard some "unfortunately" comments about the "from a script by X and Y"... could you explain that?
And also, do we know if this is aiming for theatrical? Streaming? Hybrid?

This far they seem to be aiming for theatrical.
One of the big complaints about Rings of Power is how cheap they t looked, and it certainly did at times. Now considering we know the resources they had at their fingertips, I can’t imagine Red Sonja has anywhere near that to improve its flaws. At best it could look like Solomon Kane. If it gets there, they should be happy.

Weird thing-the film isn’t even on IMDb as in production. It’s not on Matilda’s or MJ’s pages.

Jeffrey Greenstein of Millennium recently answered a question concerning the release of Red Sonja in a interview at The Hollywood Reporter: Have you got distribution and sales locked up for Red Sonja?
We’ve got international mostly taken care of, but no U.S. deal yet. We’re in the middle of shooting right now and we’re wrapping up in a week and will be putting some material together to show [at AFM].
The movie seems to be about Red Sonja fighting for the beauty of Nature confronting the Emperor Draygan who is destroying the beauty of the world: It just fit from a storytelling perspective. Sonja is about a woman who grows in nature and con- fronts this leader who is trying to destroy the beauty of the world. It’s a hero’s journey about using one’s own power to curate and protect what is beautiful in the world. That’s what’s behind the epic, fantastic world that M.J. and the incredible crew have created.

Which shouldn't be a surprise given this is a paper thin comic book character.
