I don't know. I mean, here's a set photo from LOTR by way of comparison. I'm not particularly convinced by the whole idea in the first place, TBH. I don't think it's an established or strong enough character to deliver a decent film from. I mean, magic chain mail bikini warrior virtually screams a "Xena!" type movie anyway. Well this wasn't supposed to be an exotic location shot, so they probably got what they wanted!
Exactly, and even so these houses look better, more realistic and more expensive than the MJ Bassett’s castle/fortress and gladiators arena.
Besides, MJ can only dream of having this many extras in an entire movie, not just in one scene. Heard some "unfortunately" comments about the "from a script by X and Y"... could you explain that? X - Joey Soloway “I can really have so much fun with Red Sonja. I see her a little bit more like the first kind of bad girl superhero. Sort of like the Batman of The Dark Knight or Deadpool, you know? There could not be a greater moment in our world for Red Sonja’s ways of wielding power and her connection with nature and our planet.” Y – Tasha Huo “Red Sonja is a barbarian, a female version of Conan, a superhero. Gail Simone's Red Sonja is fantastic because she is very feminist, self-confident and because it is obvious that the woman is her author. Sonja is famous for her chain mail bikini, but my Sonja will not look oversexualized like that. Sonja lives in Hyrkania. Unlike the real world in which Lara Croft lives, Hyrkania is an imaginary world and I can present it as I wish.” Any idea of a release date? MJ said that movie will be in post-production until February, so probably not before summer.

'The movie seems to be about Red Sonja fighting for the beauty of Nature confronting the Emperor Draygan who is destroying the beauty of the world: It just fit from a storytelling perspective. Sonja is about a woman who grows in nature and con- fronts this leader who is trying to destroy the beauty of the world. It’s a hero’s journey about using one’s own power to curate and protect what is beautiful in the world. That’s what’s behind the epic, fantastic world that M.J. and the incredible crew have created.' 'fighting for the beauty of Nature'......for fucks sake, the above sounds like woke shit. No, it just sounds like generic fantasy shit. Which shouldn't be a surprise given this is a paper thin comic book character. Yes, I know, you really don't like the comic Red Sonja, but we will probably not get that anyway.

They say that movies are a reflection of our time, if this is the direction that this film is taking it might as well be a fantasy version of Greta Thunberg leading her Extinction Rebellion followers on some green revolutionary crusade. The old Red Sonja film wasn't all that good, I know that, but at least it was an old fashioned revenge fantasy flick without the overt political overtones suggested in this new version.

All those corny and dumb cast group shots with everyone nicey nice and all close is kinda off putting, sometimes it's almost as if they are taking the piss out of the fans, maybe this is just one big tax write off movie for the studios. Yes, the Instagram profiles of the film crew are full of sleazy messages of thanks, compliments and support (“thanks for this unforgettable experience, it's a privilege to know you, my life changed for the better, We made friends for life..”.), but that's typical Hollywood style , it is probably one of the first things they learn when they enter that world.
I work with a large number of people at my job - if I had to fake a smile and give insincere compliments to all of them, I'd probably go nuts and quit the job.
Although we're told otherwise, it looks like MJ wasn't so independent in deciding who would be the lead actress for her movie. President of Millennium Jeffrey Greenstein about casting of the lead actress:
"M.J. Bassett has been a friend of mine for a decade and we’ve been talking about working together. We were having dinner one night, and just kind of floated the idea. M.J. is just such a huge fan of Robert E. Howard and the [Red Sonja] comic book and everything just aligned. It was the perfect fit. It’s a similar thing with Matilda Lutz [who stars as Red Sonja]. She’s been a friend for over a decade and we’ve been trying to find the right thing to do together. And it just kind of coalesced at the right moment."

To quote moderator of RS subreddit: "I don't really care for how this description is worded. It makes Sonja sound like a hippie or something."
Worst of all, even the politics/agenda that is clearly being pushed, is not the biggest problem with this film project.

Jeffrey Greenstein of Millennium recently answered a question concerning the release of Red Sonja in a interview at The Hollywood Reporter: It just fit from a storytelling perspective. Sonja is about a woman who grows in nature and con- fronts this leader who is trying to destroy the beauty of the world. It’s a hero’s journey about using one’s own power to curate and protect what is beautiful in the world.
That's what I think of when I think of Red Sonja. Not a balls-to-the-wall she wolf that was raped as a child, had her family murdered in front of her, and left for dead, who has grown into a savage, feral unstoppable swords woman who is blessed by a god, making her way through the gritty Hyborian Age. No, I'd rather think of Sonja as Red Sonja The Druid! Yes! The "Red" doesn't stand for the trail of blood and carnage she creates but rather red roses--flowers! The sequel will be about Sonja saving the whales!

I've seen the old Red Sonja film recently, and I actually like it better now than I did when it came out (hated it then). It's actually found its place as a decent 80's Sword & Sorcery flick. I put it in the same category as I do The Beastmaster, which I quite enjoy, and I think its better than Conan The Destroyer.

I'm betting on unicorns.

So it sounds like the kind of things we did as kids “Hey, Bobby got the new He Man sword for his birthday, we can play Conan if he can come out today. We can see if we can use Jimmy’s treehouse as a fortress!” May not be the optimal way to create a film, it hey stranger things have happened.
We were hoping the agenda stuff was going to at least be tamped down with MJ but that seems to be up in the air.

So, my personal new expectation: Generic fantasy movie that kinda sorta looks like Hyborian age if you squint and cock your head to the side, and yes it's called "red sonja" but ignore that it's just generic fantasy.

If it gets to generic fantasy, I'll consider that a win.

Interesting, similar to how I felt about the old Red Sonja movie, as in better than CtD, but for me not as good as CtB, although I rank Beastmaster with CtB, not the shitty sequels though.

Worst of all, even the politics/agenda that is clearly being pushed, is not the biggest problem with this film project. I know what you mean, I work in an office/home these days, we get along well enough, but the above is just cringe worthy. It's not how people act, unless they are faking it, maybe they are just indulging the director to get more gigs as they come up. Funny how the more prominent actors are often described as 'difficult to work with', although I hear Harrison Ford was very much the 'gruff kind' from the word get go. So with Matilda Lutz it was also a case of friend and somehow convince myself that she is 'right for the role'. Always more to a story. 'Green Sonja the Druid, fitting in this case. Taking everything else into account, I'm really curious as to how the end result will actually turn out.

Funny how the more prominent actors are often described as 'difficult to work with', Yes, and directors too.
It's definitely not the smartest choice to have your good mate star in a movie you're directing and he's an average actor or just can't deliver, unless the only way to get what you need from him is to fight with him and ruin your relationship. It's the same even if you don't know the actors you're shooting with at all, but you're simply too nice and polite to criticize them for their bad acting, correct them and make them repeat the same scene over and over again. The Bulgarian actor who commented on MJ's way of working on the set on RS Reddit a month ago said this about MJ's way of work:But it doesn't have to be because she's nice, maybe she's just lazy, maybe she works differently than she did ten years ago, or maybe it's just not true. And even if it is, it might refer to actors in small roles (Matilda is a good actress and I think the least problem with her Sonja will be her acting), maybe to MMA guys and bodybuilders; I mean, I wouldn't dare to tell Mike b. that his acting sucks
Anyway, the best way is to be a cold hard professional with the actors, and when you've successfully completed the filming, then you can kiss and take pictures and have parties.

All those corny and dumb cast group shots with everyone nicey nice and all close is kinda off putting, sometimes it's almost as if they are taking the piss out of the fans, maybe this is just one big tax write off movie for the studios. So MJ chose Lutz because of her 'big, warm, wonderful smile....kindest human with the strongest warrior spirit'. What the hell with that, was Bassett casting for Snow White or Red Sonja Is this how they will be casting for a future Conan, 'the actor was gentle and had a kind strong heart' That's why back in the day, kayfabe in wrestling was important. The business model was that even off stage the wrestlers did everything they could to maintain the illusion that the on-stage combat was as legit as your eyes could detect. Nowadays not only have they completely abandoned that strategy, they go out of their way to constantly remind people the show is fake down to the last detail. I know that the wrestling business being exposed was inevitable and even back then people largely knew it was mock combat to some level, but I have never seen the point of how hard they try to profit off the "reality" side of the product. It would be like a magician showing you exactly how he did his illusions right before the show. Anyway- yeah, I agree. Suspension of disbelief and immersion isn't helped by this type of thing.
