I'd go with Bella Thorne. A couple of months at the gym, a good make-up team and a good costume, and there's one fine Sonja. Definitely, the potential for a vicious attitude is there.

Judging by these behind the scenes photographs this production must have had a very limited budget. I wonder if it will even have a theatrical release. Not going to pass any judgement until I see it. Thankfully, I am not overly concerned as it is not a "true" REH creation. But having said that, it would be encouraging to see a decent sword and sorcery film. Hopefully it finds an audience.

AFM: Veronica Ferres Joins the Cast of ‘Red Sonja’ (Exclusive) The German star will play the mother of Matilda Lutz’s lead character Red Sonja in the new reboot of the 1980s sword-and-sorcery actioner.Veronica Ferres @tom-WAGNER German star Veronica Ferres (Rossini, Crisis, Salt & Fire) has joined the cast of sword and sorcery reboot Red Sonja.
Ferres will play the mother of Red Sonja and the Goddess Ashera in the new film, which is being pitched as more an adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s original Marvel comic than a reboot of the 1985 feature starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The 80s film was a notorious flop. Producers Millennium Media are also handling international sales.
Italian-American actress Matilda Lutz (Revenge) is playing Red Sonja. Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Manal El-Feitury and Katrina Durden co-star.

We will see what this will be.

I've seen the old Red Sonja film recently, and I actually like it better now than I did when it came out (hated it then). It's actually found its place as a decent 80's Sword & Sorcery flick. I put it in the same category as I do The Beastmaster, which I quite enjoy, and I think its better than Conan The Destroyer. Interesting, similar to how I felt about the old Red Sonja movie, as in better than CtD, but for me not as good as CtB, although I rank Beastmaster with CtB, not the shitty sequels though. I've mentioned before here on the forums that I could easily think of The Beastmaster as an Hyborian Age film, set out in the Hyrkanian Steppes, between the Vilayet and Khitai.

Maybe they should have cast Veronica Ferres as Red.

Maybe they should have cast Veronica Ferres as Red. She’s in her late 50s and still looks like that? Damn!

Matilda doesn't look like Red Sonja, but her movie mother does, and Sonja/Matilda doesn't even look like her mother/Ferres. Absurd.
What's worse is that they used/stole RS characters and motifs from Roy Thomas (even though MJ keeps repeating that her Sonja has nothing to do with the Roy Thomas version), but changed/modified them, so instead of having Sonja's mother and Goddess as separate characters, looks like in the movie we will see some kind of a mutant of the two of them. They did similar thing with the characters of Mark Russell and Michael Oeming. Creative freedom in the movie adaptation of the comic book? I would rather say-lack of creativity and imagination and a cheap forgery.

I am reading Solo, by William Boyd. It's a damn fine James Bond novel, and I am reminded on things I've read about the making of the first James Bond movie, Dr. No. The budget wasn't huge, but the filmmakers (director Terrence Young and producers Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman) were determined to spend the money they had wisely.
Instead of going with a star for the lead, they went searching for an unknown, but not just any unknown. They considered a multitude of actors, but they decided upon Sean Connery, a male model who had been acting for over a decade in small parts on TV. They were looking for a specific "look" to fit the character in the novel, and Terrence Young said that Connery got the part because of the way he walked, "Like a panther stalking prey."
Even though the budget was low, they spent their money on the Dr. No set at the end of the film and on, believe it or not, Connery's wardrobe. They went to the most expensive clothing stores and dressed their James Bond to the "T".
The result was that a record 27 movies have been made, and the series is still going strong, about to reinvented again with a new actor.
Just think. If Young and the producers hadn't have focused on the exact right things (the important set piece and the way the actor fits the part), there probably wouldn't have been a James Bond series. I wouldn't be talking about it here.
Their approach to movie making seems to be the exact opposite of what is being done on the Red Sonja film.

The team that makes RS movie had this approach:
- Hey, my good friend is an actress and has already appeared in action films, we will choose her to be Red Sonja.
- But does she look like Red Sonja?
- What does that matter? We'll put a red wig on her.
Some news about post production in Greece.

Will be interesting to compare the trailer for the new Red Sonja with the trailer from the 80's film. Having watched the original, and thinking about it now, it's almost the unofficial sequel to CtB.

Here's a better look at Sonja's movie sword:
Sonja's weapon. Why film producers mostly go for some purely fantasy style sword is beyond me. I mean look at that guard, movie producers love thick spikey guards, look at those ridges where the handle meets the guard, uncomfortable when your hand is pushed against the guard in a fight, the ridges will grab at your palms, also the pommel seems too pointed, try grabbing onto that for extra leverage and it will dig into your hand too. For fullered swords, fuller should should start at the base, not some way down. I can see that sword being sold as a stainless wall hanger, but not for someone wanting to do tatami test cutting or even a few platic water filled jugs. The rule of thumb, the blade portion should be as dangerous as possible, the grip, the part you grab onto, should be as comfortable as possible. They should research ancient and medieval style swords and go from there, a small fantasy bend on something historical is always best. Well said.
Women and children: - They are attacking our village! Quick, Sonja, help us! Sonja: - I am coming! As soon as I can get hold of my sword.

Look at that 'sword', looks like some cosplay toy. What a cumbersome piece of junk. The people making this production are fools. For shites sake, they need to consult with HEMA practitioners and historians on ancient and medieval arms and armor. What the hell is wrong with them !?!
