I hope Dynamite doesn't treat this like another churn and burn licensing deal. This is important, the work of two giants. They better get it right and not start strong and peter out with rushed, sketchy interiors.
I'm definitely in if the creative team is one of quality.

I look forward to seeing how this turns out. A few years ago there was talk of Robert Rodriguez making a live action Fire And Ice, maybe this will build some interest to get that going.

'Frank Frazetta Had No Input On Fire And Ice, Says Gerry Conway Yesterday, Bleeding Cool reported on Dynamite Entertainment reviving the 1983 animated movie Fire And Ice for a new comic book series, and like everyone else called it Frank Frazetta's Fire And Ice in the headline. Directed by Ralph Bakshi it is billed as a collaboration between Bakshi and Frank Frazetta, based on characters co-created by the pair, from a screenplay written by Conan comics writers Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas. The press release stated of Baksi and Frazetta, "he two developed the concept together and the film's art style was based on Frazetta's work, brought to life through Bakshi's animation. They then called in comics scribes and Conan the Barbarian veterans Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway to handle the script." But Gerry Conway has a different timeline and credit share in mind, and posted to Twitter, stating; Love it. But I hope Dynamite recognizes the only contribution Frank actually made to "Frank Frazetta's Fire and Ice" was the poster. Roy Thomas and I created *everything* else (such as it is), using Frank's paintings ("The Death Dealer" in particular) as vague inspiration. So, in the series credits, @dynamitecomics, it would be appropriate to have a line that reads "Based on the screenplay by Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway" Oh, and for what it's worth, according to Writer's Guild rules, we probably should also get a "Characters created by" credit. Not trying to be a dick, really, but in no way did Bakshi and Frazetta "co-create" any character or storyline in "Fire and Ice." Frank came to one meeting early on, basically a meet-and-greet. Roy and I developed *everything*, including characters, names, storyline, etc. Even the title "Fire and Ice" was ours. The whole concept was ours. FTR, we wrote a two-hour script which Ralph filmed for rotoscope. We knew that at the time two-hours was too long for an animated movie, but Ralph wouldn't let us make appropriate cuts. Instead he shot the two-hour version and then cut out a half hour of material that included all the character development, world-building, etc. He even managed to cut out all reference to the masked character's name. Still, it's a lovely film, if light on sense. Anyway, I'm proud of the film, but tired of people referring to it as "Frank Frazetta's Fire and Ice"— yes, he's the reason it got made, Bakshi used his reputation to fundraise and market it, and Frazetta's poster is iconic. But Frank had no input into the story whatsoever.' bleedingcool.com/comics/frank-frazetta-had-no-input-on-fire-and-ice-says-gerry-conway/Well, the film had the 'Frazetta look' to it, and if nothing else he did provide the cool art for the poster.

Totally cool with Conway wanting to get the credit he deserves but tbh the movie itself said Bakshi/Franzetta all over on posters, covers, in-movie credits etc., so if he wants to be acknowledged more for it, he is like 40 years late imo.

F&I comics? It would be great of course, but only if we can see an authentic representation of the original characters. And I doubt that is possible in these times. Original Teegra in 21.c? No chance.
Remember this?

Remember this? Dynamite comics have no problem with stuff like this. Or Ablaze

Some Dynamite stuff is so sexual nowadays, you have to hide it from guests to not be a creep, so I don't think this would be a problem

So.... I guess Gerry Conway won't be writing the series then? I'll cross my fingers for Roy.

I watched Fire & Ice for the first time a month or so ago. I actually liked it. I've never been a big fan of animated shows, unless we're talking about comedy (even then, I watched The Simpsons with a girl who loved the show--I don't watch it on my own for some reason).
Fire & Ice was very different--it's atmosphere.
I like it.

I agree, if they wanted all the credit they shouldn't have used FF's name to promote the film. As you said, they plasterd FF's name on the film and how he was part of a collaboration/production with Bakshi on the project, what did they expect. If they didn't want that, they should have just hired FF to the poster art, made no other mention of him, same like when he was hired to do the cover art for the Ace/Sphere Conan series.

Dynamite Entertainment has announced a prequel comic series to Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi’s film Fire and Ice, to be written by Fables creator Bill Willingham with art by Leonardo Manco. The series, also titled Fire and Ice, will launch in August 2023 with covers by Bill Sienkiewicz, Joseph Michael Linsner, Mahmud Asrar, and Francesco Francavilla, as well as Manco, and another cover will feature Frank Frazetta’s original painting for the movie’s poster. The new series coincides with the 40th anniversary of the film, which was released in 1983. The original Fire and Ice movie was developed from the art of Frank Frazetta and animated by Ralph Bakshi. The script was written by Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway, who had both written Conan the Barbarian comics for Marvel. The prequel series will depict the lives of the main characters, Princess Teegra and the young warrior Larn, before the events that brought them together in the movie. The story in the comics will stand on its own, so it will be accessible to new readers, but will also fit seamlessly with the timeline of the film. Dynamite announced last year that it had secured the rights to develop comics and a tabletop game based on the film (see “Dynamite to Develop Comics and Game Based on Frazetta and Bakshi’s ‘Fire and Ice’”), and it is working with the families of both creators on the project. This would make a cool poster, kinda captures the prehistoric side of heroic fantasy.

Gerry Conway had a bit of cry the other year, only natural that Roy Thomas gets his turn, yes, the usual FF had no input in Fire & Ice and it was all written by Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas stuff. bleedingcool.com/comics/roy-thomas-complains-about-fire-and-ice-comics-dynamite-responds/'Roy Thomas, known for his work as a Marvel editor and writer in the sixties and seventies, including his run on Conan The Barbarian, does not seem to be best pleased at the news and has released the following statement through his manager John Cimino, saying "I'm pleased to hear that someone is going to write prequels, sequels, or whatever to the Fire and Ice film for which Gerry Conway and I wrote the screenplay (for Ralph Bakshi, and incorporating a few of his ideas plus the general inspiration of Frank Frazetta) more than 40 years ago. Actually, the film was not, as the release says, "a collaboration between Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta"–it was a collaboration between two and Gerry and me, because we two wrote the screenplay and, although Ralph had thought up a couple of scenes before he phoned me, much of the screenplay and its plot and dialogue owe little or nothing to Bakshi, let alone to Frazetta. That's like saying Taxi Driver was a collaboration between Scorsese and DeNiro and forgotten Paul Schrader's screenplay." "Of course, I feel Gerry and I should have been offered that writing assignment, and no one else; the smaller companies are supposed to be so sensitive to the rights, legal and moral, of creators, aren't they, even if the screenplay is technically owed by another party. Dynamite Comics knows this, but choose to act otherwise, and while I'm not going to raise a stink about it, I certainly do not give them my blessing or approval… whether they want it or not."' For crying out loud. If they wanted all the credit why did they agree to work on a project where FF's name would be plastered all over the Fire & Ice promotion decades ago. All I can recall was seeing that it was produced by Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta. Have to agree with Nick Barrucci on this one. Very diplomatic. 'When asked for response, Nick Barrucci of Dynamite told me "We have great respect for Roy, and slightly confused by this statement. Roy contacted Dynamite last year when we announced that we were working on Fire and Ice with the Frazetta and Bakshi families, and this current statement contradicts what he wrote then. He saw the announcement that we were planning on the series, and reached out, and stated that if an adaptation were to happen, that he would like to co-write it with Gerry if Gerry were up for it. He even offered the screenplay for other writers to review for prequels and sequels if we so wished. His current points are confusing to us. We have the utmost respect for Roy and Gerry, and are open to working with them if it can be a relationship that works for everyone."'

I was skeptical at first. Dynamite is great at pretty covers, but I can’t think of a single comic that didn’t disappoint me once I looked inside. They have failed to do a lot of IPs justice over the years (Barbarella comes to mind!)
But the interior artwork I’ve seen for this looks pretty darn good. Might have to give it a chance.
