Disney needs content. That's the working theory out there, though there's zero indication there is anything currently going on. However, Marvel has moved VERY quickly to get Conan deeply integrated into the Marvel Universe proper. I'm not expecting Conan to be popping up in any Marvel super hero show or anything like that, but they've put their stake heavily into this piece of IP so that it wouldn't be hard to believe they'll be looking toward doing...something other than comics. Would it not be wiser then to go with Ryan Condal's 'ready to roll' pitch for a Conan television series, than try to squeeze one last drop of interest out of an Arnold-starring sequel to his 80's Conan films? The former could have a broad future. Limiting King Conan to Arnold book-ending ongoing tales really sounds like a non-starter. Unless even though Amazon have canned Condal's pitch, they still have the rights for a number of months? From what I can remember all rights, including Ryan Condal's Conan, are back in the hands of Cabinet/Pathfinder Media, in other words Fredrik Malmberg.

Who knows what kind of fine print type material may or may not be involved, it could be locked up for a period of time or simply people aren't interested in that take (Edit-or what Hun said). I'd prefer the type of show Condal was pitching and don't think an Arnold centric project would be on anyone's list of things to go to first with the character, apart from a small side role. But it's all speculation as of now. It's just it seems with the way they came right out of the box with material, Marvel doesn't have any intention of letting the character go any time soon.

Is anyone seriously going to risk Arnie on a new Conan film when his last in a much more well known franchise is looking like it'll lose nearly $130 million.

No big industry movie really loses money. They are covered pretty well. The same way banks didn't lose money during the peaks of the world economic crises, because they got bailed out. One can only talk about "loss" in terms of expectations.
That said, the latest Terminator did under-preform big time. But that only means that now film or TV production companies are able to get Schwarzenegger for a much lower sum then before. And if they can do that, why wouldn't they be willing to bet on a guy who made Conan the Barbarian, Terminator, Terminator 2, Predator, True Lies? It's not like Schwarzenegger is some one-hit wonder. You don't say no to Elvis in music business and you don't say no to Schwarzenegger in movie business, no matter what.

The best chance we had was the Amazon deal, and they passed on it. I've heard it had all the makings of a phenomenal series, too.
I can't see any studio investing in an Arnie sequel unless it was green screen and extremely low budget ala 300.

I really had some serious objections to 'Colony' and the king Arthur script that Condal did (not to mention that The Rock movie with animals), so I have some reserves regarding the praise that Condal's 'Conan' got from Condal's peers. That said, I didn't read his 'Conan' script, so I was willing to give it a chance (and I never expressed anything negative about it while it looked like it was a go).
You are probably right that if any studio invests in a Schwarzenegger Conan sequel, it is going to be a low or in best case a moderate budget movie. Or -- a TV series: 65 million ('300' budget) should be enough for a mini-series of 6 episodes.
Now, they already have three scripts to pick from: one is 'Legend of Conan' by Will Beall; the other is Milius' 'King Conan: The Crown of Iron'; and the third is Charles Edward Pogue's 'Conan the Conqueror' ('Kull the Conqueror' was based on it though there are enough different things in the script, plus numerous things that could be improved, that a new film based on the same script would really be a different film; also, De Laurentiis obviously has the rights to that one, but this is, I think, not some major obstacle, deals can be worked out, etc.). My favorite would of course be the Milius' one. I am just saying with all this they don't need to wait for the script, so this might also be an important factor when it comes to some studio making a decision: they can get Schwarzenegger, there is already a script so it could be a product which is already half way there.

They may need to abandon all those scripts if Arnie is the star. This would no longer be King Conan, but Old Man Conan.
Is the Legend of Conan script based on David Gemmel's Legend? That might work. A hybrid of Legend and Unforgiven, but would it be profitable? I dunno, the more I think about it, this would need to be as bare bones as possible otherwise it would be considered a box office bomb. The time to do King Conan was after Arnold did True Lies.. not now.

Yeah, 'Legend of Conan' is based on David Gemmell's 'Legend'. But from what I know, it is a mediocre-to-bad screenplay. KiramidHead wrote a review of 'Legend of Conan' screenplay in 'Conan Unmade' thread on this forum (post was made on Apr 13, 2018).
Regarding Schwarzenegger, if they are going to make a Conan movie with him now, in any case they would have to use a stunt-double with a CGI-head pasted on top of stunt-man's body, like they did in the latest 'Terminator' or like they did in Lucas' 'Star Wars' sequels with Christopher Lee. And I guess with that, they can really do anything. The question is only what they want to do, how much are they prepared to invest, etc.
Regarding profit, I am an Ayn Rand student in that respect: I believe a film will be able to make big profit only if a lot of money is invested, not less. Namely, people, viewers, want to see something which was previously not seen. That is one of the reasons why the latest 'Terminator' flopped: just by seeing trailers, we saw that was a film which had nothing substantially new to offer. Let us see the age undreamed of and the shining kingdoms -- even people who don't like Conan would want to see that.

Personally, I’d rather no Conan movie over something slapped together to try and accommodate a now aging Arnold. I love the guy, but that ship has passed. Jason would be a better fit for a Conan the Usurper/Day of the Lion movie depicting Conan tearing the crown from the mad king’s bloody head. Or go full reboot with a complete unknown.

The motion picture indsutry has moved on since Conan 2011, and the kind of star power and clout that Momoa has now compared to CtB 2011 is vast. If Jason was happy to revisit the character but with an entirely different creative team behind it, then he could quite easily do so. I'm also not believing for a second that there is an actual active King Conan project in development right now with Arnold. You're right, Schwarzenegger's career is virtually over. :\

Yes, Schwarzenegger's "star power" isn't what it used to be, but the last 2 Terminator movies would still be total garbage with or without him. It's the clueless movie industry that thinks they can slap a franchise title on a mediocre, PG-13, CGI fest and it's going to be a hit. A great Conan movie (with Arnold or Momoa) could be made for a modest budget (use real exotic/interesting filming locations, practical effects and base the script on A HOWARD STORY), but no one in Hollywood is smart enough to figure that out.

Going the modest budget and keeping it real 'road' is exactly what they should do for Conan. I championed back in the day Mr Neil Marshall to direct Conan 2011 after seeing his first-class action drama 'Centurion', in particular his depiction of northern Scotland and the tribes of the Picts. Very Cimmeria! As for Arnold, i don't think it's going to be long before the telephone stops ringing. An action star is dependend on being able tyo pul off action, and at Arnold's age, that is obviously becoming increasingly hard. No-one wants him as a purely dramatic actor, even though 'Aftermath' proved otherwise for his ability. Unfortunately, Arnold is, to the regular member of the public, the face of Conan. Arnold promoting a non-existent Conan project keeps that image afloat, which must be good for CPI/Cabinet.

King Conan - What's Going On With Conan's Sequel? Explained

Is it me or is most of Arnold's information in that video seriously misinformed? He talks about the Howard Estate (perhaps he simply means Cabinet and Malmberg), a young guy who wants to use the rights to get into Hollywood, and how that is causing problems? Unless Ryan Condal still has those rights from his pitch to Amazon, then Cabinet would bite the hand off of any studio with clout that wanted to go down the King Conan route or could do justice to a Conan television drama. What's your take on it, guys?

You can find posts relevant to Arnie's 'young guy' interview starting around page 11 of this thread.
