I have not read the books, but have watched all the episodes. S08 E05 episode from Sunday was pretty amazing. Once again, this show made my jaw drop. It's amazing that I can still be completely shocked by the plot developments after all these seasons.
I feel very lucky to be able enjoy some of the best low-fantasy ever put to film. I hope some others on the forum have enjoyed this show as much as I have! I can only hope Conan will be put to film one day and surpass the quality of GoT. Crom willing.

I don't know about this show... On one hand I like the twist...but I don't know, the books would have been so much better I think. It's amusing seeing people flip out online, though lol. It is quite funny, but that doesn't make them wrong. Most of the points they're making seem pretty sound to me. ...... I think they are pretty sound too, actually, and I agree with many of them. I just wish they had several more episodes to dedicate to the story, because most of this season has felt so rushed - especially this latest episode.

Tonight's the night, lads. I read spoilers and I don't think people are going to be happy.
Me...I kind of did a 180 and now want GRRM to finish the books. I think his vision is going to be superior if he can pull it off. He might not have it in him anymore, though. I hope he does because this deserves a better ending than what we're getting. The tv ending just feels so rushed. I don't mind what happened or what's going to happen tonight, but it was executed poorly.

Yeah, I'm thinking that the books will have a more satisfying ending...if Martin ever finishes them.
In the meantime, here's a video of a scene from last week's episode set to 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' by Metallica, and I think it fits perfectly:

I have one question left: Where does Winds of Winter stop and Dream of Spring begin? C'mon George, we can get a ballpark answer...

I was satisfied with the ending, and things turned out kind of how I was hoping they would (without spoiling anything). Though I felt that things were rushed in episode 5, and I wish the writers had had more time to dedicate more story to certain characters, the finale wrapped it all up nicely.

I'm fine with it if it turns out the same, but I'd like to see how he handles the missing/eliminated/truncated plot lines and supporting characters. I'm fine with how it ended, just not the rushed execution. I'd love to see Maester Marwyn, Barristan the Bold, Griff and Young Griff, hell, Dorne! Not to mention Victarion and the real Euron. The books will surely be more rich... I just hope this didn't kill his seemingly, already dwindling motivation.

Hopefully the TV series made George focus a little more since he let his last book get so out of hand he had to break it in two, then take all the characters people really cared and moved them off to the second one. The series really blew off Feast For Crows apart from a few general plot points, Dance With Dragons made off much better. But he still seems to be sticking with both Winds of Winter and Dream of Spring being 1500 manuscript pages, which I think translates into 800-1000 page books in print.
We generally know Winds of Winter should contain (lots of spoilers here so stop now if you've never seen any of this and don't want to until a later date):
The Battle of Meereen (Slaver's Bay) led by (on the TV show, the late) Ser Barristan Selmy
Shireen's fate and the fate of her father
Jon's return after that considering the same person was involved in both
Jorah bringing Tyrion to Dany (remember these two STILL hadn't gotten to where they were going in DWD)
A big battle on the ice (presumedly Hardhome which took place before Jon's death on the show)
Arya should get her sight back and likely finish her training
The Reed kids get Bran to where he needs to go (and maybe somebody holds the door) and he may see who Jon really is, but George may hold that off until DoS, even though we all know at this point.
We may find out what happened with Brienne and Lady Stoneheart
The episode titled Winds of Winter in when Cersei destroys the sept with wildfire so it's possible this takes place in this book as well.
It's unclear exactly when the Battle of the Bastards will take place, on top of the fact in the books Ramsay isn't married to the same person he is on the show. If it's not in WoW, this would leave three big battles for Dream of Spring: two at Winterfell and the final one at King's Landing.
Martin has his work cut out for him. I think he will get Winds of Winter done, but A Dream of Spring may remain just that unless he's got a lot set out in notes and just needs to bang it out (evidence seems to suggest he's got a plan to where the characters are going, but in some cases he's not sure how they get there, the same way David & DB had to figure it out too).

And George answers...somewhat...
"And I’m writing. Winter is coming, I told you, long ago… and so it is. THE WINDS OF WINTER is very late, I know, I know, but it will be done. I won’t say when, I’ve tried that before, only to burn you all and jinx myself… but I will finish it, and then will come A DREAM OF SPRING.
How will it all end? I hear people asking. The same ending as the show? Different? Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes.
I am working in a very different medium than David and Dan, never forget. They had six hours for this final season. I expect these last two books of mine will fill 3000 manuscript pages between them before I’m done… and if more pages and chapters and scenes are needed, I’ll add them. And of course the butterfly effect will be at work as well; those of you who follow this Not A Blog will know that I’ve been talking about that since season one. There are characters who never made it onto the screen at all, and others who died in the show but still live in the books… so if nothing else, the readers will learn what happened to Jeyne Poole, Lady Stoneheart, Penny and her pig, Skahaz Shavepate, Arianne Martell, Darkstar, Victarion Greyjoy, Ser Garlan the Gallant, Aegon VI, and a myriad of other characters both great and small that viewers of the show never had the chance to meet. And yes, there will be unicorns… of a sort…
Book or show, which will be the “real” ending? It’s a silly question. How many children did Scarlett O’Hara have?"
Oh jeez, I forgot there's ANOTHER Aegon Targaryen still around! Mance Rayder is still running around too.

Though I felt that things were rushed in episode 5, and I wish the writers had had more time to dedicate more story to certain characters, the finale wrapped it all up nicely. But was that really what you were expecting from Game Of Thrones, aggro - that it would all be wrapped up nice and neat like that. I don't mind so much the fact that they failed to address so many of the things that had been hinted at in earlier years, but just that they made so many easy and nonsensical choices throughout the last six episodes in order to finish it off in that manner. Without giving anything away from the last episode, I thought that almost every character was ill-served by those choices in the end. And the sentimentality in this one felt like a final insult after the disappointment of all that had come before. ...... SPOILERS: Neat? Hell no. What I was expecting, before this current season, was a bloodbath with most of the characters dead and nobody sitting on the throne. I was HOPING from day one that most of the Starks would still be alive and that they'd still hold the North, however, so I was glad to find that to be true. No doubt episode 5 was rushed, and I expected Daenerys to go mad, but the craziness scale suddenly jumped from 4 to 10. I like how the final episode resolved things, but I wish they took more time to get there.

This was brought up in our discussion over on the Masterworks site and it's too good a point to gloss over:
So how did anybody know Jon did what he did when he was the only one there and Drogon flew off with the evidence?
One for the "So how did they know Kane said Rosebud when nobody was in the room with him?" file. My thought is they deprived Kit Harrington of a great moment when he lets everybody know what happens. He's got his mopey look on when Grey Worm and the Unsullied come in, they ask what happened and in a couple of lines tells all. Could've been as good as Emilia's moment at the end of Episode 4 where she goes through 4 or 5 emotions on her face in about 7 seconds without saying a word.

As my lad said when the Unsullied and the Dothraki found out Dany was dead surely they'd have gone on a rampage and killed anyone left in King's Landing!
