Red Sonja by Mahmud Asrar Now this is absolutely beautiful IMO. I love the mail shirt from the BWS days. It's not only more practical than a chain mail bikini but it also looks great.

This art is crap, imo. Looks like Barbie meets meanie Sinbad The Sailor. Cue the diabolical laughter. I dunno, the art looks fun.

Don't get me wrong. I don't hate the bikini. It's actually iconic but I always thought the shirt was more realistic, not that sword and sorcery genre thrives on realistic concepts😁. Nevertheless I absolutely love the way Asrar draws Sonja.

I was thinking Barbie as I was looking at this, too! It looks like art for a kid's comic, not an adult-oriented Sonja comic.

Nevertheless I absolutely love the way Asrar draws Sonja. Yeah, I don't think Red Sonja in traditional nomadic trousers and a long overcoat something along the lines of a Mongolian deel would sell too many variant covers for Dynamite I agree about Asrar's rendition of Sonja. I'm looking forward to his work on King Conan - maybe Aaron can get it right this time?

Damn. Lived a long life though. Definitely responsible for one of the most iconic depictions of Sonja although he seems to draw all his women with the same face, but that's besides the point. Unfortunate news, especially since he died on the same day as his wife.

Unfortunate news, especially since he died on the same day as his wife. Sad news! I wonder if this was a case of broken heart syndrome, as they call it. At the same time, neither spouse had to live for any considerable length of time without the other to deal with the immense grief and pain. There's something kind of romantic about two people who love one another passing together.

I read the Red Sonja comics--all except the recent stuff that had Sonja in modern day New York. Can't stand stupid stuff like that. Didn't like Conan when he did it and hooked up with the Avengers, either. Not my bag.
But, much of the Red Sonja comics are quite good, if not always dead-on Hyborian Age.
The RS stories are often quite bloody and gory, as is fitting for Hyborian Age stuff, but the world is seen through a different filter. I haven't read it yet, but I just received The Queen's Gambit TPB. Flipping through it, I see the writer put a bridge--looks like a bridge that an army could use to cross--across the narrow middle section of the Vilayet. I don't know how many miles it is across the Vilayet, but that seems like a bridge across the English Channel, Lake Superior, or the Mediterranean Sea, all of which seem very unlikely given the technology of the Hyborian Age (unless Sorcery was involved).
So, sometimes the stories are from writers who are not versed in the Hyborian Age--or maybe motivated to make their Hyborian Age different from Conan's due to copyright issues. Sometimes the stories are excellent but not fitting for Conan's world.
Red Sonja is not a great swordswoman by herself. In fact, she is a victim, her family murdered and herself raped and left for dead. Sonja gets her power from a god who took pity on her or decided to use her as her presence on earth, depending on what story you read.
I read one story where winged, flying lion-men were a race. It felt much more Dungeons & Dragons (with a sprinkle of Flash Gordon) than it did Conan Hyborian Age, but I do admit that the story was excellent. It was a great read once you accepted it wasn't Conan's world.
Though, often, Red Sonja tales seem to be just filling in the vast blank areas east of the Vilayet.

I'd love to hear, say, your top 3X Red Sonja graphic novels (I'm casual comic reader at best, and only spring for graphic novels so it has a complete story).

I'd love to hear, say, your top 3X Red Sonja graphic novels (I'm casual comic reader at best, and only spring for graphic novels so it has a complete story). The first one that comes to mind is the first Red Sonja omnibus (Omnibus one and two, two books). These are parts I and II of an epic story that I thought was just downright brilliant. As I said above, parts of it feel more like a different fantasy world than the one Conan lives in, but the story is really awesome. The art is pretty damn good, too. This story is also a perfect place to start as it includes Red Sonja's origin story. In fact, the entire epic tale has something to do with her origin. I would say start there, and if you like it continue the story with the second omnibus (which climaxes at the end of that book). Omnibus Vol 3 picks up a generation later and is an entirely new story. The second one that I would recommend is the Queen Sonja saga, which is awesome. We see Sonja take and hold her kingdom in the lands east of the Vilayet. I loved this series, and it even includes the origin of the chain mail bikini! This is a very well told tale.
