I agree! While my favorite depiction of Conan is by Buscema, I do realize that that kind of body type doesn't make a whole lot of sense when you think about it. I think REH would go for the heavyweight boxer that you mentioned, and that's pretty evident from his stories anyway. Thanks! I've been getting some results that are a little similar to that with the Copic markers, I think, and I've mostly been using those lately. Here's one I just finished yesterday that you may have seen already: That's another cool seasonal one Erik! She's come a long way since her early perilous test flights on that broomstick. I notice you gave her familiar a character arc too over the years - from terrified to confident to flying his own broom.
Great results with the copics!

Thanks, Von K! She certainly has! It was actually my wife's idea to have the familiar riding his own broom - I'll sometimes call her into the room to ask for her opinions or ideas. She actually helped me with the color scheme on the previous rendition when I wasn't sure which colors would be best.

Your wife's idea of a witches' familiar riding his own broom seems like a wholly original one - I've never seen it anywhere else before your pic.
I'd lay wager you can't find anyone else on the internet whose either thought of it or drawn it before!

Ok I tracked down some pics of witch's familiars riding broomsticks alone. Not something I'd seen before or was 'familiar' with (if you'll pardon the pun). But I've sill not found any that show a familiar on a broom flying alongside their witch like your pic does so, if you add that proviso, it's still a novel conception as far as I can see.

Wow, I hadn't even considered that it would be such a rare idea, actually. Obviously, I thought it was a good one, though! It's often nice to have that other perspective from someone else, as my ideas can admittedly get a bit stale at times. Or occasionally, I'm not even sure what I'm going to draw, or I simply lack the inspiration. Some great drawings have started with a boring reference photo of some kind, or a vague idea, and they've grown and become something much better as I went along. And having my wife step in from time to time to give her thoughts can really boost the creative process. I'll let her know what you said about the familiar on the broom, so thanks!

Here are a couple more of yours from many years back, which I thought I'd re-post for those who might have missed them:
Viking Jarl
and
Viking Warrior

Thanks for sharing these, Von K! I always liked how the bottom one turned out. I've had a couple people tell me that it reminds them of a Viking Walter White, which always made me chuckle.

Yeah, I can see why they'd make such a comparison, he's definitely got that kind of face and demeanor! Stylistically that pic reminds me of Tim Bradstreet's stuff too - with the detailed realistic technique you used.

If I'm remembering right, I think I was actually looking at some of Bradstreet's work for inspiration and style techniques during that time - Especially the illustrations he did in the Del Rey edition of El Borak.

Here are a couple recent drawings I've made, both pirate themed: And my character that I play in a pirate-themed six-part D&D series (Pathfinder: Skull & Shackles):

Great stuff as usual Erik!
How's the campaign going? Are you captains yet or maybe even sea lords? How did your character build work out?

Great stuff as usual Erik! How's the campaign going? Are you captains yet or maybe even sea lords? How did your character build work out? Thank you, Von K! It's going well so far, actually. We're in chapter 5 of 6, and we performed well enough that we are ALL pirate lords sitting on the Pirate Council (instead of just one of us, as originally stated). My character build is working out quite well with the two-weapon wielding, as long as I get a full round to attack. We're all very well suited for aquatic adventuring too, which helps greatly. We are currently building a fleet in preparation for an upcoming attack from an old enemy, so we're becoming familiar with new rules for Fleet Battles. It'll be an all-out battle on the open waters!

Sounds fantastic Erik. Makes me nostalgic for my gaming days - haven't gamed in many years, and never in a nautical campaign of this scale. Very cool of your GM to allow you all to win a seat on the pirate council. Makes more sense for a multi player game imho.
Dual-wielding is a great choice for a ranger. Once they've chosen the style it frees up their standard feats for other stuff and can still be useful under water I'd imagine.
If you are now pirate lords facing a mass battle at sea in chapter 5 I must wonder what chapter six will offer to top that.
