Eesh, nasty! Was this in a computer game? You mentioned reloading, which makes me assume it wasn't tabletop. Communal Acid Resistance is pretty key, which is actually what I had Sandara cast on most of the party when we encountered the first qlippoth outside the tower we were about to explore. There was another one inside that we hit with mostly ranged attacks (after learning the hard way the first time). Somewhere at the bottom of that tower (we came in through the top) is something called 'The Shrouded Queen', which could be a nastier qlippoth (?). In the room we're in, there's an iron trap door that's secured with lengths of chain and a Forbiddance spell. On the wall near a skeletal figure, the following is written in charcoal: "THE SHROUDED QUEEN YET LIVES BELOW, BOUND BY BLACKFINGERS FORBIDDANCE AND AIGER’S KISS. SEEK NOT ENTRANCE FOR NAUGHT BUT HER ROTTING CURSE AWAITS YE - LET THE SLUMBERING DARKNESS LIE." We decided to stop there for the night and have our characters rest, since the remainder of the tower above us is cleared and there are no immediate threats. This Shrouded Queen supposedly guards a powerful sword that could help us deal with Barnabus Harrigan when we surely meet him later on, but we're a bit hesitant to open that door... Yes you're right, my encounter with qlippoths happened in a Pathfinder crpg I used to play, though I haven't gone back to it in a long time.
I'd be very careful about opening the door at the base of that tower! The set up here reminds me of the Watcher's Keep from the old classic crpg called Baldur's Gate 2. You enter through the top and descend through increasingly dangerous levels of traps tricks and beasties. The creature imprisoned at the base of Watcher's Keep turned out to be Demogorgon, Prince of Demons, who can casually gate in mariliths and glabrezus!
Not sure what level your party is but The Shrouded Queen sounds like a serious challenge!

I played through BG2 and the Shadows of Amn expansion, but I don't remember facing Demogorgon (it's been like 20 years, though). I had to look that on up, so maybe my party read the scroll to seal him in the tower.
It really does, and we're 12th level. We're down a couple players next session too, so if we even choose to continue down the tower, that encounter might have to wait. It has to wait a bit anyway, because we got called back to our ship (via a Sending spell) because it was about to be under attack. As soon as we teleported back, the captain of the enemy ship had second thoughts when he saw us! And we called it there for the session, so we'll see what that's all about next time.

BG3 has recently come out, based on D+D 5th edition, and it seems to be very popular.
The Sending spell sounds useful, I'd not heard of that one.

I know hehe. It certainly doesn't seem like it was that long ago.
Yeah, I'd love to play BG3, but my graphics card right now wouldn't be able to handle it. But that's fine, cause I really don't have the time to dump into another extensive game like that anytime real soon.
It's definitely very useful, yes. And the best part is that there's no limit to the distance, as long as the person you're trying to contact is on the same plane of existence. Plus, the person can respond in kind.

My PC is an old rig too. It can't handle BG3 and for the reasons you mentioned that's probably for the best.

Yeah, it's at the point now that if I play video games for more than an hour, I feel guilty for not doing something that needs to be done around the house (or other important work). Gone are the days of wasting a day in front of the TV playing games!
