Between this and the new Marvel Conan comic, we're getting two different alternate takes on Conan's career at once.

In general this looks very promising news for Conan fans.
Amazon now have the two grandfathers of modern fantasy in their lineup with Robert E Howard’s Conan and Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Given that they recently paid 250 million up front for the global TV rights to LotR, before even production costs are considered, they are certainly serious about their desire to challenge the Game of Thrones Crown for the top fantasy TV series.
The article also mentions Dark Agnes.
In terms of creative freedom, quality of writing, and audience familiarity TV is definitely a better way to go in today’s market with this kind of production.
Some of the best writing is on TV. Been that way for a while.
Perspective from an interview (4 years ago) with screenwriter Paul Schrader:

I'm optimistically hopeful about this news. It will be a couple of years before we see anything, but this is very good news.

Well well well... what other big surprises have the REH OWNERS got hidden up their flabby weak butt-cheeks? it will be fun to guess /see who they cast in the main roles? and which beauties they cast as Belit and Valeria, and which big bouncey natural tits and real champion bellydancers they cast as dancers, whores and harem girls? i cant see it being a big success - most of the world is confused and sick of crappy corny 'conaaan' poor versions, and conan the huge barbarian [who pisses his money away] is just a big joke franchise? [ the broke owners pissed their big money away on the shite momoa film ] This huge amazon project is the biggest chance for decent on screen conan antics. [ if they f##k this up, Crom will leave for Mars! ] So start praying to Mitra, now. Me, i am praying to Loki - that is more surprising and more fun. ==== I just hope that their THOTH AM[AZ]ON sorcerer isn't having amusing poncey discourse with an arogant dripping Skull in a swirling bog-font, every effing episode ?? [ i enjoyed reading all the many comments under those news items. and chris tolkien trying to defend amazons crazy Lotr decision ] ==== and what is malmberg also doing: dark agnes??

Making a Howard adaptation is going to require some changes. Some tales like Vale of Lost Women if adapted straight would result in the creators being crucified, but some the core can be maintained albeit with a few small changes. For instance; Black Colossus. Some might accuse the plot of Thugra's army attacking the northern kingdoms as being a racist fantasy but you can get around it by showing that most of his men are serving under duress (i.e. they only serve because they're really fucking terrified of the guy). Timothy Truman had Shah Amurath as a disgusting rapist, but had a counterbalance in the character Afreet (one of Conan's trusted captains who teaches him Archery and appears from beyond the grave to help him out of his funk.); Fred Van Lente's run showed the misery that the Gallah endure under the Chaga; as such they're uprising is portrayed as a rather natural reaction to tyranny. That kinda thing. Also for all it's flaws DH's Thoth was probably one of the most compelling versions of the character. He's arrogant but he backs up his arrogance with being really fucking scary (the scene with the avatar made of beetles was downright horrifying). And I didn't actually mind Thoth coming from humble origins in that it makes him a dark reflection of Conan (Conan's proud of his heritage Thoth's ashamed of it, Conan maintained his humanity Thoth sacrificed his for power).

Well a TV series is what I think we all wanted so fingers-crossed . Put me in the optimistic pile ;-) Terry Agreed. And TV shows are held up to some pretty high standards these days, so hopefully we'll be seeing a quality show that's much more faithful to REH's vision. Looking forward to this!

What worries me in the quote posted above is this: "...faithful to the spirit of his Conan character." (emphasis mine). Why can't it just be "faithful to his Conan character"? It seems to me that anytime anyone tries to develop something "in the spirit of" an established character/setting/franchise a few too many liberties wind up being taken, and usually not for the better. That said, I will remain cautiously optimistic about both this Conan series and the Middle-earth one also in development by Amazon until such time as concrete and accurate reports about their actual production begin to surface.

Yeah, being "faithful to the spirit of" can be a two-edged sword. I know Jackson's Lord of the Rings wasn't as faithful as many thought it could have been, but I think (for the most part) you can tell that he was faithful to the spirit of Tolkien's creation. On the flip side, Jackson's Hobbit veered a great deal away from the spirit of Tolkien's creation despite his claim that it was true to it.

I don't know much about the inner-workings of the licensing or the movers and shakers in the world of Robert E Howard's characters, etc, but the fact that Fredrik Malmberg, who will also be an executive producer of the show, is also on the board of directors of the Robert E Howard Foundation has to be at least an encouraging sign, right?

And let's hope Conan has black, square cut hair at least. Not frilly curls and eyeliner. Make him look like Conan at least.
But excited, choobetcha.

Don't worry, the Hyborian Age will be diverse, Conan will be an anorexic blonde, though.

Exciting news, saying a prayer to Crom that this venture does justice to Conan. CONAN THE CIMMERIAN for Amazon Studios. Glad "the barbarian" moniker is being dismissed. Conan the Cimmerian sits better with me Gleaned from the creator / writer Ryan Condal's Twitter page. twitter.com/WrathOfCondalNow, who can perfectly portray the new Conan?... Another chance for Momoa?
