I always felt that Tom Barber (mostly known for his covers for Zebra) was underappreciated:

I always thought that Mario Guevara never really had a chance with the DHC's Solomon Kane. He's grown by leaps and bounds, IMO. Check out his work on Nevsky: : I could see this guy doing Conan. He's been a Conan fan all his life.

Simonson is an excellent fantasy artist. A pity Marvel didn't use Walt more for that in the '70s. The fact that his "Hyborian Age" had to be finished by Ernie Chan (because Marvel ran him off) is just a tragedy.

Schultz sometimes has a problem depicting men (including Conan, IMO), but his women are always dynamite:

More than forty years since I first saw this illustration in SSoC #6. I'm 99% certain it's by Alex Niño, but I'd appreciate it if someone could confirm that. It's mostly the signature that instils the doubt for me, although the style seems consistent with his work. Also after forty years: I've just twigged that Conan is carrying a severed head in his left hand. ...... Conan • SSoC #6 (Marvel Comics)That was with the Lin Carter write up - I'm pretty certain it is Alex Nino, and of course he does the art on 'People of the Dark.' in the same issue.

Schultz sometimes has a problem depicting men (including Conan, IMO), but his women are always dynamite: When I was studying, my instructor reinforced the notion that it's easier for an artist to draw the same sex as him or herself. At least it was for me. Probably because I was drawing Spider-Man and Army battle stuff long before formal instruction. It's been a while since I've taken pencil to paper, but maybe I'll get around to doing something new since my daughter has really developed her skill. Time to pit the old man against her in a draw-off! Anyway, I agree with your assessment of Schultz. But I do like this one: It's a personal preference, but I think if you create a work of a character in a relaxed situation, then they shouldn't appear all "flexed" and pumped up. If it's an action scene, sure. Like my avatar by Gary Gianni: There's brutish power on display here, but no weight room time. Also, this thread is showing a lot of influence. BWS to Conrad? And was everyone else impacted by Alcala? I know I was!

I would've staked good money on it (being a 40yr Nino fan), but I have the Cap'n to back me up: capnscomics.blogspot.com/2015/01/some-conan-by-alex-nino.htmlSome nice art in that post.

Awesome pic by Mark Shultz there! Very Fabianesque. As a matter of fact, without Mark's signature you could have fooled me it was by Steven Fabian...
