I have a smattering of various Tor Conan novels, but the only author I felt was worth collecting was John Maddox Roberts (and John C Hocking). I think JMR’s Conan worked for me because of his historical fiction background. He knows how to use ancient weapons, and how ancient societies functioned. Like REH, JMR writes a fantastic historical swashbuckler and adds just enough horror and sorcery to create S&S; that’s how to do it.

I am reading Conan and the Amazon and got to say I am loving every sentence. Believe it or not this is my first Roberts. Why it took me so long I have no idea except after all the hype I guess I was afraid I would be let down. Roberts has a lot of the gift that Howard had, he is just an excellent storyteller and his characters are very vivid. I have just pushed him to the very pinnacle of Howard pastiche writers. I am also looking forward to the new one by Mr Hocking but I also have seven more Conans by Roberts to enjoy...awesome!!!!! John Maddox Roberts is my favorite pastiche Conan author of all-time!!! He is awesome!!! Conan the Rogue is a great book that I suggest you check out.

JMR used to be a frequent member to the old boards. It was pretty cool to be able to interact with him back in the day.

Thanks for all the kind words, guys! Hi John. You know how much i have lovingly recommended and supported your conan books in past ages. You rock! Big long octopus-like hugs from the very busty weird temptress who would never stop sucking. See you under the Temples in Innsmouth, and in the Bahamas. ---

the Black Shields by JMR is very good indeed. Very strong female characters...kinda unusual...lots of solid world building...totally not inspired by Tolkein...no elves, dwarfs, rabbit people, skunk midgetts, fairies, wood sprites, ...none of that stuff. More of a hyborian age with different animals instead of different variations of people...although I found the blue skinned folk very interesting

Andre Norton and Sterling Lanier also wrote novels in that vein. REH never did. Good SF adventure novels from Mr. Roberts. Ken Kelly covers. I read them all back in the '90s.

I've purchased Conan The Rogue and Conan The Valorous on Abesbooks, The valorous has already arrived. The Rogue is still on it's way, hopefully it will show soon! Would kindly welcome opinions on these two pastiches?
