I actually think this issue is the second best Conan book I've read from the Marvel relaunch to date (behind Conan the Barbarian #4 with Zaffino art).
While the coloring does some damage, Ron Garney is truly capable of drawing a solid sword and sorcery comic. The story is actually not bad, still not a fan of Conan seeing that map, but the writer gets points for bringing in Valusia so early since the books have been back at Marvel.
I'm curious to see where this goes, going to keep catching up.

That might have been the fastest issue of a comic that I've ever read. It sure was fast paced and action packed, though. Seeing Conan go up against a dark sorcerer is always fun. Looks like he put some type of tracking spell on Conan's sidekick that I'm sure will come into play next issue.

I would say this particular issue was the worst of the 4 so far. This story was moving at a decent pace but if Conan has to go through all those trials this could get very drawn out.
Seeing Conan fight the Lemurian Age Pict skeletons was cool, though.
It was a mistake for them to have arcs beyond 2 or 3 issues for Savage Sword. This book should be fast-paced and bloody, not the B title of the line. Something that stands on its own and worthy of the history of the name.
Speaking of...why did they put those classic covers behind Alex Ross' image on the cover. Very weird...
Conan should be fighting the sorcerer at this point, not his possessed undead former sidekick.

I read all 5 issues today. It only took around 40 minutes - I also made a cup of tea and had a cigarette within the same forty minutes. As you can tell, there's not really enough there for 5 issues, maybe it'll read better as a graphic novel.
In this story-arc we are told '...twenty winters previous, Conan of Cimmeria drew his first breath as his mother gasped her last.' There's an annoying habit of the current Marvel writers, in this case Gerry Duggan, constantly reminding the reader that Conan will be King one day. When Conan is captured by the pirates we are told that '...clasped in iron, Conan the Barbarian never seemed so far from his goal of becoming a king...' Are we to believe that's the reason why Conan left the Dark Hills of Cimmeria? Cos' he's always wanted to be a King of a Civilised Kingdom? What complete nonsense.
Another thing, will Marvel stop reminding us in almost every single issue that Cimmerians don't pray to Crom - we've been told the same thing from the very first issue of CtB, and in SSOC and Avengers: No Road Home. We get it; the Cimmerians are tough!
The artwork by Ron Garney is kinda O.K. You get used to his rushed/rough style, eventually. I really dislike the digital line-work, it lacks character, contradicting the rough, loose style Garney has applied in this book. At times the action scenes don't make sense in this book and the characters shift from place to place for no reason, before you know it Conan's got the better of his opponents with an over dramatic/stylized pose.
I think overall, a fun book if you can overlook a few (If I'm being honest, considerable) inconsistencies.

I think the last time I had 40 minutes to read comics in one sitting was around 2015!

I think the last time I had 40 minutes to read comics in one sitting was around 2015! Yeah, it can be difficult to find the time. These days, I usually read comics on the tube/bus on the way home from the comic shop. Most of the modern comics take around 5 minutes to read.

I'd rather wait for the collections - I assume they will be compiling the new ones?

The Direct Market version will be available at comic shops on the 24th of July, 2019. There's also a Black & White edition: swordsofreh.proboards.com/thread/969/savage-sword-conan-black-white

I knew it was time to cut back a few years ago when I was able to finish an issue on the bus BEFORE we left Port Authority! My trip home these days doesn't take me past Midtown Comics and it's a pain to read them on the subway in NY so I just do the digital versions...and spend the 5 minutes that way!

This was a thoroughly mediocre arc, if not, an enjoyable one at times. I did not care for any of the characters besides Conan, who I thought was decently written. The prose is very average at best, lacks the poetic quality of the good Conan stories. The narration is offal that could have been disposed of, and it would not have made a significant impact. Regarding the art, most panels are low quality rushed art. With a few exceptions of splash panels, the art is overall bad. Issue one and two are sleep inducing. Issue three to five are fun. I give this arc a four out of ten.

I'm fed up with Conan being portrayed as a brute stupid man, with no intelligence by average artists and writers. What a waste of time.

This is bottom of the barrel materiel.

Ouch, man It has a little poetic quality, doesn't it? Sign me, Dude Who Wrote The Prose HAHAHAHA! What a misunderstanding! There's a reason I didn't write all these complaints in The Shadow Of Vengeance thread! I was shitting all over Gerry Duggan's prose! Not yours! Your prose is great, very poetic and beautiful at times. I like The Shadow Of Vengeance so much so that I think I'll read some of your historical fiction novels.
