Well I did my part and got both covers, Midtown had them in a 50/50 pile, plus my bonus kicked in so one of them was free (as well as the next 3 issues. BTW-for those who've visited Midtown or their website, Hal will be leaving soon, he's bought a new house). Nice! I would have grabbed both covers, but my store didn't even have any on the rack. I had one copy reserved for me, which is the Lee Bermejo cover, so I'm happy.

BTW-for those who've visited Midtown or their website, Hal will be leaving soon, he's bought a new house). I had a chance to give it a quick read through on a very crowded train (there were severe electric problems causing big delays). Short version-very well done. It reminded me of a Thomas-Buscema issue from the 25-45 era. Conan is written in character and drawn big, overall the art is good. Looks like we're getting back on solid footing. I agree, it did feel like the early CTB issues of the Thomas/Buscema run. Thankfully, the art has improved, I still think Davila has to work on Conan's face, he's not quite there in that respect. I should also add that Conan's physique was a little inconsistent, his body-frame appeared to change halfway through the comic. Conan should always look dangerous, and that should be evident in his body language - even if he led his 'desert wolves' to their death and was hunted by Turanians, wounded and exhausted etc... I did not feel that the illustrations demonstrated in any way that Conan was stronger than his adversaries. But, I still consider this a very good first issue, and if Sergio Davila is there for the whole 25 issues I expect him to only get better.

I liked it too. At first I thought Conan's self doubt was annoying, but than you realize it's unique. The first time he got his men killed it was because Sergius sold him out to Amurath. With the Black Corsairs Belit shares some of the blame. With Amra's bastards they got swept into a highly chaotic event involving a horde of soldiers and an evil wizard. Here it's entirely his fault; he got cocky and his men died. It also looks like Conan's going to have a mentor student relationship with the youngest son; Conan teaches the son to be more assertive, the kid teaches Conan the value of a little more restraint. It's a great concept and not a white man's burden story.

Big improvement on the art, I look forward for the next issue, I have not been able to say that for quite some time.

It is too early to judge this series but I felt there is room for improvement in the art department. Conan should never look stiff in battle scenes, but like an agile panther, instead. His facial expressions are also a bit inconsistents. Just hoping for some improvement over the next numbers.

The art isn't too bad.

Certainly room for improvement but we're starting from a much better place. Davilla just needs to refine his approach, thankfully not enact wholesale change.

I have a personal theory (my opinion only) that Conan makes lots of mistakes; his mistakes would kill an ordinary man. But Conan survives his own mistakes, and learns from them. That's part of how he got so smart. This issue was more Howardian than I've seen in a long time.

I broke my long-standing boycott and bought this, and was pleasantly surprised. I like the art, its not going to be my favorite but its very good I think, and the tone of the story feels like Conan. I will keep going with it and hope it is worth it! Oh, and I was most pleased that the faces were not seemingly based on the baby from South Park like the last series seemed to be.... Sorry, could not resist that one - I will try to be objective as possible going forward

hi all, I read this and liked it a lot, I liked the art and thought the story was consistent and "Conan", I think this will get better and better. Just to note, some one mentioned earlier that there are two covers available for no.1, there is actually three. the third is a limited edition of 500 by Rafael Alberque available at SDCC 2016, it's pretty good and is a wrap around cover with same contents I think.

Enjoyed the first issue. Will pick up the next one.
I thought the art was really good, the writing started out strong. Cullen Bunn did well on Moon Knight and I hear good things about that western title he wrote. I feel pretty good about Conan the Slayer.
