Hey, guys, let's be sure and let Dark Horse know how much we like Conan the Slayer, and why, and how much better it is than some past series, especially those of us who complained about those past series.

Not a bad idea. Just keep the comments positive, we can get a little emotional some times. :-)

Looks like the Forbidden Planet in London has already sold out of the 1st issue! The same goes for a couple of other local comic-book shops. That's probably an indication that they did not expect the new series to do so well! But, they were wrong I'm sure Forbidden Planet will pick up more issues from Diamond. Maybe they will increase orders for the next couple of issues. It'll be interesting to see the final sales figures for Conan the Slayer 1, I'd guess that it'll be around the 12,000 to 15,000 mark.

Dark Horse only needs to keep improving the quality of the book. They are now in the right track.

Weird. I couldn't find Avenger when I went there (I was visiting my sister). Ocean Beach (where I went last time) didn't have it and didn't plan too. Maybe now they'll reconsider

It certainly sounds like they underordered. It bodes well enough, I'd be happy with something near 10k for a first issue.
Looking back they ended up losing around 35% overall during the 25 issues of Avenger (10,500 down to just under 7000). That's not a bad attrition rate, especially something that low already. Hopefully they'll start higher up.

I had skipped most of the Avenger run after dropping Wood's run, but decided to pick this one up because I had liked a lot of Cullen Bunn's creator-owned work (Sixth Gun and Helheim in particular). But I wasn't a fan of his work-for-hire stuff for Marvel or DC, so I was a little leery of him doing someone else's character with Conan. I stopped at a local shop who had only ordered 1 copy of the book and picked up their only copy. I liked it, but didn't love it. The art looks decent, but some of the panel to panel storytelling and the flow between flashbacks and current events needs some work, as it is a bit choppy and doesn't flow as a visual narrative as much as it should. The actual anatomy and panel composition though is solid. Bunn here was better than his other work-for-hire stuff, but for me not as good as his other creator-owned stuff. I will add the book to my very small pull list, and give it a chance though. From his interview, it seems Bunn is at least on the right page and it will come down to execution. I do hope the art team stays consistent this time and they don't rotate teams for each arc like they sometimes do. I think writers and artists need to work together for a time to develop a rhythm and synergy that you don't get with quick hit teams doing one-off arcs.

Here's the note I just sent:
Hello,
Just wanted to drop a line to say how much I enjoyed Conan the Slayer #1. I've been reading DH's Conan comics since they started and, to be honest, have been disappointed over the past several years in the main series (though Truman & Giorello's work on the King Conan series has been consistently stellar). I wasn't familiar with Cullen's or Sergio's work in the past, but thought they made a great team. The issue reminded me of the early Roy-Thomas-John Buscemi issues of Conan the Barbarian. Bunn's characterization of Conan at this point in his life is spot on and Davila has a muscular style that really suits the material. I take it this series will cover the Devil in Iron at the very least. Based on what I've seen from the first issue, I'm looking forward to their take on that story, as well as possibly Shadows in Zamboula and if they'd like to take another crack at People of the Black Circle (we're right at the point in Conan's life), I'd be fine with that too!
