A great double-page spread by Big John Buscema and Ernie Chan (King Conan 1)

Buscema defined my mental image of Conan, probably more so than even Frazetta. This Buscema drawn monster from King Conan also put the zap on the young me.

Buscema was the best at portraying movement and action and everything else - and, remember this is just a quick sketch.

Thanks Kail. I love the QotBC run by Roy Thomas and John Buscema. Overall, I found that run to be a bit hit-or-miss, hun - both story and art. When Ernie Chan returned to the character, I found his style to be much more overwhelming on JB's art than it had been on his first run. I would have liked to see them doing that particular story in one of the first Savage Sword issues when all the talent involved was fully committed. ...... I get what you mean about the run being a bit hit-or-miss. I think some of that has a lot to do with the workload of John Buscema at the time - if I remember correctly, around halfway through the run, Buscema was also on pencils for Tarzan, Thor, SSOC and the odd issue here and there for Marvel. I remember Howard Chaykin pencilled a couple of Conanized REH yarns that Roy Thomas tried to squeeze into the QotBC run. I did not mind Ernie Chan's inks during this run, admittedly, he did at times overwhelm the pencils of JB, but, I think, more so, later on when Roy Thomas and Big John returned to SSOC. I have the QotBC comics bound in 2 volumes and still read them every couple of years or so. I sold the rest of my Conan comics years ago. They are the only Conan comic-books in color in my collection. I still have the first 60 issues of the Savage Sword of Conan and Savage Tales 1-5. They are fantastic, especially the first 30 issues and they are by far the best adaptations of Conan to date. I also would have liked to have seen QotBC adapted in one of the early issues of SSOC. It would have been interesting to have seen how Roy Thomas would have adapted the yarn in SSOC. Would it have been adapted over 2 issues? Or would he have expanded on the adaptation?

That's the one. You did some parchment toned variants featuring REH's poetry as well if I recall

I like the comparisons and contrasts between him and Kirby. In my own opinion, I think he even exceeded Kirby. Great article, hun.
