Beat me to the punch, soon as I saw the variant cover I thought John Buscema.

Spoiler alert for those have not read #16 yet.
I kind of liked the D&D Conan arc. It had action, a mystery, and Conan pretty much being himself amidst people from different backgrounds. #16 though seemed like a thin epilogue. The people rise up against Conan for offending their religious beliefs, he's captured, a ghost frees him, he hunts down the leader, leader reveals the religion is fake and under duress makes Conan an offer to be his heir, Conan reflecting on his comrades who died in the maze declines with maximum impunity.
Superficially this is Howardian, civilization is corrupt or corrupting as only an outsider like Conan can see, but the review above is wrong that this was some sort of orientalism. Howard applied this basic setup to European civilization, and its Hyborian counterparts. But I don't buy Conan's rejection on his affection for his deceased comrades, most of whom didn't like or trust him in the maze. No, I think Conan wouldn't want to become king in waiting to such a horrible person, wouldn't trust him, and wouldn't want to rule over a city that essentially rose up to kill him for sacrilege.
And to be fair some of what I've liked about the Zub arc is that there is more action, but the political intrigue stories involving Conan that lead him to potentially accepting a crown have a bit of a different pace, and to be honest, there is very likely a woman involved with whom he's grown attached.

Love this Buscema inspired variant cover by Roberto De La Torre. We so need more Conan art like this. Awesome imagery. A touch of Krenkel in there too imho.

We so need more Conan art like this. Awesome imagery. A touch of Krenkel in there too imho. Yeah, I can see that. Kinda reminds me of the Sowers of the Thunder collection illustrated by Roy Krenkel. Roberto De La Torre will be illustrating the Claremont story in the upcoming King-Size Conan comic.

I love that map of the eastern Hyborian lands with Hyrkania and the Vilayet occupying the west, Khitai and Lemurai to the east, Vendhya to the south, and everything else in between. I like to imagine Australia somewhere far to the south and east of those lands. Map from Conan the Barbarian 17.

Love this Buscema inspired variant cover by Roberto De La Torre. 10 out of 10. I think such cover pleases fans because it reminds us all of the best Conan series that has ever been published: The Savage Sword of Conan. Everything that resembles the series will please fans, who grew up reading those great stories. If Marvel strays too far from it, it will most likely be a failure.
