Here's a review by By Rik Mertens at Comic Watch Conan The Barbarian #23: “I Am Not Your Enemy. I Am Your Weapon.”Recap HUNTER OR HUNTED? CONAN has been framed for the murder of the emperor and is hunted by the Imperial Guard. But Conan has not survived the Hyborian Age without learning some hunting tactics of his own… The dramatic conclusion to the Nightstar saga!
Review By Crom, “The Land of the Lotus Part 5: Escape from the East” starts off running and never stops. In this final chapter to the Tooth of the Nightstar story, we see the bigger picture surrounding the demon blade. Like usual, Conan is swept up in events beyond his control. That is until he picks up a sword with revenge on his mind. Even if you are an assassin of the Fifth Circle, don’t cross swords with Conan. I hope the closing scene was foreshadowing of more Meiwei in Conan’s life.
B-story We are treated to political intrigue for our B-story. There’s politics in the God-emperor’s court, and ambitious Maltus-Rai has plans to use his guile (and Conan) to increase his power-base.
The Words Jim Zub has these characters down. From the opening line of the comic “Know, oh prince, that the years when the oceans…” to the final page, fans of both the movies and the original Robert E. Howard stories will immediately recognize their favorite characters. Conan speaks as if he jumped directly from a classic short story to this new tale. I couldn’t help but read the narrator’s word balloons in the voice of Mako Iwamatsu.
The Art Cory Smith draws a great Conan. Watch the eyes of his characters. The facial expressions are a master-class in conveying emotion without speech balloons. Israel Silva’s colors set all the scenes. The colors can be found in the big things like Conan running through the shadows, the fire from the Tooth of the Nightstar, and the magic energy from the God-emperor’s magic. It’s also the small things like the ambient light from the lantern in Meiwei’s apartment that casts Conan’s face in shadow.
Between the Panels What I really like about the panel work in Conan the Barbarian #23 is the sense of depth conveyed in each panel. It’s like we’re looking into a 3D space with visual treats in the foreground, middle and background.
World Building We start the adventure with a map of Hyrkania, Khitai, and surrounding lands. Khitai’s Capital City is lushly illustrated from the Emperor’s temple to Meiwei’s room to Maltus’ pagoda to a coastal village and boat. All the environments in this story are united by a consistent architectural style (down to the armor, swords, and boats). Who’s in this Issue Conan Lord Maltus-Rai Meiwei Boquin Tooth of the Nightstar God-Emperor
Favorite Quote “With your spells and my sword arm…” Conan to Meiwei
Who will like it? Barbarians, adventurers, sorcerers, and assassins will like Conan the Barbarian #23. It reads like a classic Robert E. Howard tale down to the description of Crom’s children, the Cimmerians.
Nit Pick Meiwei’s face isn’t consistent from scene to scene. It’s a small thing and won’t detract from your enjoyment of the story.
Comic Connections The original Robert E. Howard story, The Tower of the Elephant, may have a bit of information about Khitai. I Need More If you haven’t read the other four parts of Land of the Lotus, start this adventure with issue #19. Comic Watch has a Sneak Peek at issue 21 and issue 22. Jump on YouTube. A quick search for “Conan The Barbarian (1982)” or “Basil Poledouris” will have the soundtrack you need. LibriVox has some of the original Robert E. Howard Conan tales available as audio book downloads. The Hour of the Dragon might fit as a follow-up quest.Final Thoughts I jumped into "Land of the Lotus" with the last chapter of the story and had no trouble getting caught up on what problems Conan had gotten himself into this time. It felt like I was reading a classic Robert E. Howard Conan story.Original source: comic-watch.com/comic-book-reviews/conan-the-barbarian-23-i-am-not-your-enemy-i-am-your-weapon

I think the story, dialogue and art came together nicely. Conan wanted Meiwei to join him in the end, that would have made for some interesting futures adventures if she had accepted his offer. Cool variant cover for 23

This was a strong arc. I am pleased to see Conan comics regaining their former quality. If the higher ups at Marvel have a lick of common sense, they'll let Jim Zub write till he's had his fill of the barbarian.

Those variant covers look amazing. Reason enough for me to buy the comic. But even more so if the future arcs keep up the quality that CtB currently has.

At the beggining I had my doubt but after reading the whole arc I love it, by far the best arc provided in the new Marvel Conan era. Cant wait for his next arc, as the the #25 will be a conmemorative number.

Jason Aaron and Mahmud Asrar will probably take over the book after issue 25. I think initially, the Aaron King Conan would have been a separate title, but thanks to the low sales figures for CtB Marvel will only commit to 1 monthly title set in the Hyborian Age, for now. Really unfortunate, cos the last story by Jim Zub is easily the best since Marvel reacquired Conan in 2019.

Thats a shame because I didnt liked their story arc, in 12 numbers they didnt perform something (for me at least), I know that Jason Aaron is a great writter and I have hear wonderfull reviews of his Thor comics, but on Conan he was...all over the place, maybe an ongoing series wiht one arc could work bettter. Also I just find out that Marvels Dark Agnes was cancelled after 2 numbers, is a shame I do liked a lot.

Really didn't like a lot of the stuff Aaron did with Conan when he was writing.

Lets spam Marvel, unable to update the original tweet but here is a copy paste: " I tried to bring it all together in this arc.
So glad you enjoyed it. If you want to see me write more Hyborian adventures after issue #25 (Legacy #300) let Marvel know via their Conan fan mail address: CONAN@marvel.com"
