CtB 13 was a quick fun read, reminded me a little of one of those choose your own adventure fantasy gamebooks from the 80's. Yeah, too much like one of those choose your own adventure fantasy gamebooks. Jim Zub is heavily into D&D , sounds like that's the reason.

I can understand that Jim Zub is into D&D, but this issue went too far. This is his 8th issue now and his work has declined dramatically since the SSOC run. I doubt Zub has anything new to say with the character.

I enjoyed this issue. Conan will never be as good as it was back in the day. But this was innocuous adventure and, at this point, I’m fine with that.

Hopefully they can improve on it. Spoiler?..... The last page was cool. Did Conan get skewered from behind? I couldn't believe my eyes.

It certainly appears like it, but I hope it isn't as bad as it looks. I'd rather not see him dragged through the rest of the challenge, so maybe it's some kind of phantom wound.

Aha! Appears I was on the right track with my speculation about a "phantom wound". Good!

I do kind of like the idea of a shadow assassin that tries to kill you with the accumulated violence you've lived through.

Reviews: CONAN THE BARBARIAN #14 Conan’s time in The Crucible continues in this issue, and it quickly dives into some wildly-unexpected territory. The issue provides more context about the other fighters that are joining Conan in this fight, while also adding a major mystery or two in the process. It’s unclear exactly where things are going to go next for this warrior, but the ride Jim Zub, Roge Antonio, and company are crafting seems worth the ride. -- Jenna Anderson
Rating: 4 out of 5 comicbook.com/comics/2020/03/18/new-comic-reviews-dc-marvel-image/#4The Rundown: Conan will have to trust a group of strangers if he has any chance of surviving the Crucible, but that trust will come at a cost.
Conan is confronted by one of the many traps located in the Crucible and we learn more about the history of the city, the demands of its god and the purpose of the Crucible. As Conan overcomes the creature dragging him through his past, he makes allies with an assassin trapped in the maze with him and rescues more potential allies from a giant menace.
As the group finds time to rest, they learn from a previous champion that assassins are brought in to cheat the competition and this causes distrust among the new allies. When Conan awakens to find one of his allies dead, not only does he wonder who the killer is, but also how he will defend himself against their accusations.
The Story: Jim Zub adds an element of intrigue to an already engrossing story for the Cimmerian. Conan is placed in a situation that challenges him on all sides and Zub makes the journey engaging to the reader while also recalling the history of the character himself. The plot is well laid out and the story moves with a sense of foreboding and mystery as the dialogue makes the characters stand out and capture the interest of the reader. This is an entertaining issue that is leading to some interesting story to come.
The Art: Roge Antonio delivers some beautiful art throughout this issue. The use of shadow in the darkness of the maze is perfectly executed and the characters are beautifully drawn. The action is fantastic and I can’t wait to see how this mystery unfolds.Words by Deron Generally Rating: 9/10 www.superpoweredfancast.com/conan-the-barbarian-14-review/As Jim Zub kicked off his CONAN THE BARBARIAN run last issue, our Hyborian-born Barbarian found himself unknowingly entered into a contest and declared The Rock or I should say “The People’s Champ”. But, the admiration and affection didn’t last long as Conan quickly discovered he was entered into this cities Crucible, which appears to be a trial of death traps to honor Challi-Mai, the god of many gods. Like American Gladiators, Conan must survive the competition against seven would-be warriors. However, as the last issue came to a close, Conan was stabbed through the chest by a shadow warrior! Let’s leap into CONAN THE BARBARIAN #14 by Jim Zub farther than the cover portrays our young Cimmerian and see what other traps and tricks are waiting in Conan’s path.
Readers, I wouldn’t say this is a good CONAN THE BARBARIAN story, however, I would say it’s a great story overall for any genre. Zub delivers a tale filled with blood, action, thrills, mystery, and conspiracy. There is genuinely nothing about this story that really makes it unique or distinctive to Conan in my opinion. Conan’s characteristics are very generic of any fighter or worthy combatant who could easily be replaced by any other. But again, the backstory, the setup, and the fascinating quandary involved as this story comes to a close is extremely fascinating.
This is not Jason Aaron’s CONAN THE BARBARIAN but it is highly enjoyable and packed with a thoroughly planned and well-organized backstory that Zub quickly establishes to ensnare his audience. All this reviewer can think of as the anecdote unfolds is, how were all of these individuals chosen for The Crucible? And, who’s the secret assassin hiding in the mix? Truthfully, my first guess didn’t make it!!! So, I got my theories now but what does this secret assassin gain by doing any of this? Either way, I’m all in and stunned by how much I’m enjoying this comic without it really feeling like a CONAN comic to me.
The other surprise to this reader came in the form of the artistic style. After the last issue, I simply didn’t like how the art sat with me. But now after the second installment, Rogé Antônio realistic, yet Disney XD cartoonish style is really growing on me too. It’s certainly quite different from its predecessor’s artistic license BUT still very powerful, authentic, and substantial. I really appreciate the heavy line work, solid color choices, and the way the backgrounds are dropped out of focus, if not nonexistent, during important battle sequences or crucial moments within the context of the narrative. My crack of this issue being “Disney XD”-ish may seem like a knock BUT I rather enjoy those illustrations immensely.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I simply can’t rave about this issue enough. Sure, it’s not what I’d expect from a CONAN series. But, as I stated in the last reviewer, this Conan is young and impressionable. So, maybe he’s a bit off and will continue to be throughout this entire run. Furthermore, that could be why this story seems like any warrior could step in and replace Conan without the story skipping a beat. Either way, readers can’t deny the sheer high powered warfare and savagery this issue dishes out with a complimentary side of mystery and suspense that locks you in for next month’s adventure. If you’re looking for something new to read while you’re “social distancing” that you never would have tried before, give CONAN THE BARBARIAN #14 by Jim Zub a look. If you’re a long time Conan fan, grab this issue and let me know if you’re as dazzled with this story as I am. And lastly, if you can’t make it into your Local Comic Shop, give the Marvel Unlimited App or Comixology a try! Anybody got a line on #14 in print from anywhere online? Things From Another World only shows 13 & 15... I ordered what I wanted (my local comic shop is completely shut down), but the descriptions of this run intrigue me... Conan mashed up with D&D?! Count me in! Mick.
