The story 'Winter of the Wolf' from issue 133 was always one of my favourites. Good interior type by Gary Kwapisz and Ernie Chan. Man I absolutely love Gary's art. Admittedly, you can see a lot more of Ernie here. Gary isn't talked about as much and I wish he did more work on Conan by himself.

Not as big as John Buscema, Ernie Chan and Alfredo Alcala, Gary Kwapisz was still a mainstay of the classic SSOC artwork. Myself, I preferred Gary Kwapisz as part of a collaboration with Ernie Chan, although I don't remember him doing much of the Conan artwork on his own. Nearly everything Gary Kwapisz had Ernie Chan attached to it. It was a winning combination. I also liked the breakdowns by John Buscema when paired with the Ernie Chan finishes and tones. Check out SSOC 78.

Still remains one of my favorites. Another good instance of Gary's art don on his own was Conan the Savage #7. Buscema and Ernie's combination was phenomenal. Arguably the best work to grace the pages of Conan.

For me, the archetypal SSOC was issue 100 when it came to the art work. Cover art by Joe Jusko John Buscema and Ernie Chan interiors. Script for the main story by Michael Fleisher.

They made Valeria a little too silly in that issue, more like a ditzy teenager from some sitcom. I preferred her characterization in issue 138. Valeria is no Red Sonja, but I think 'Lair of the Lizard God' handled her roguish nature in a much better way.

I also liked the back cover for 138, Conan descending into some dark lair. It was the art by Mike Docherty and Armando Gil.

When it came to artists doing all the work themselves, I liked the work of Alfredo Alcala and John Buscema. SSOC 61, 'The Wizard Fiend of Zingara'. Story by Michael Fleisher, Art by John Buscema.

Yes I completely agree. Unfortunately, at the time, I had only been familiar with the character of Conan for a month or two so this was my first experience with Valeria's character and yes, she did annoy me. I also don't know why Sonja's hair was colored black in that issue but I kinda like it.

Hi, I'm at the start of collecting SSoC. I have books 1, 5 and 21 of the Dark Horse omnibus. I saw some opinions that collecting the original magazines was the way to go. I know the omnibus books don't have non-Conan material or any of the essays. So I have two questions:
1. Is it really better to collect the magazines instead of the omnibus books? 2. Is there anywhere I can find the non-Conan material in the magazines? Has it been collected? Are there scans available (even low-quality is okay by me)?

Marvel's Savage Sword of Conan collected omnibus editions contain all the material, Conan and non Conan. One of the few things they got right in the last few years in relation to Conan.
Getting the original SSOC magazines would be best, but getting harder ( and more expensive ) to collect all of them so the Marvel omnibus is the way to go now.

I did a quick calculation and it's like $1200 to complete the DH omnibus collection for me. Is that comparable to the Marvel omnibus stuff?
