I have a feeling the Conan Netflix project is dead in the water. No official announcements since September 2020 nor reference to it at the Netflix TUDUM event. Time to pass it on Funcom, release the Cimmerian from development hell.

I'm not overly optimistic about the Netflix deal, but let's wait and see.
Unfortunately, we've got no other choice when it comes to seeing a TV series, movie or animation based on REH's Conan.

C'mon why? We don't even know what's on offer yet. If they ever do offer anything is another matter. Exactly, at least give them the opportunity to present something. They may get it right, they may screw it up. It's more annoying to not hear anything after being told "Yeah, we've got X, Y & Z that we can't put real names to now, but just wait...and wait...and wait..."

But I don't trust any other Hollywood studio or streaming company these days. Just wait and see what pc garbage Amazon is going to make of LOTR. These are the worst times for a film or television adaptation of Conan. Whichever Hollywood company grabs him, it will change him and turn him into his own parody to suit the sick political trend of Hollywood in the last ten years. I don't want to see one of my favorite childhood heroes butchered, ridiculed and humiliated, nor do I want to see his fake picture that Hollywood will present to millions of viewers who have never read a single REH's story, or old Marvel, or DH comic book, and who will have no idea what the real, original Conan is.

I agree with hyrkanian. A series produced by Amazon or Netflix would almost certainly be crap. I have no enthusiasm for the Netflix project at all.
The only chance for a half-decent Conan adaptation would be a more independent production. Keep it away from the big woke studios as possible. No Disney, no Amazon, no Netflix.

Unfortunately that is something that does have to be worked into the equation due to the mindset of a lot of talent out there. I'm going to throw in an example out of left field: And Just Like That. The stated intention of the people going into the show was to "make up for the excesses" of Sex in the City. Well, they didn't exactly show the characters in the finest light back in the first show, but now they've thrown every cliche in the book in there and it's not a pleasant experience. My wife liked the first two episodes even though I warned her, then when a lot of the stuff in the third episode hit, she was like "Where did THAT come from?...and that!...and THAT!" The most sympathetic characters have been treated like dirt and guess what, they're all men (Harry, Steve and yes even Stanford, God rest Willie's soul. What is Aidan walking back into?)
On the other end of the equation, I'd put Marvel. They've certainly had their hiccups and forced moments (looking at you F&WS Ep6), but when they get it right, it doesn't matter. Hawkeye is a great example. Marvel had this run where they pushed alternate versions of heroes, then wisely stepped back and let the characters grow and develop. Miles Morales got off to a rough start until IMO they showed he and Peter could exist at the same time. So by the time you get to putting Kate Bishop in with Clint Barton in a TV show, you have a developed character you can then let a talented actress like Hallie Stansfield take a hold of and make her own, and it doesn't feel forced.
I'll be honest, I don't have a lot of hope in the Red Sonja film due to the filmmakers' previous work and stated intentions for the film. As I mentioned over in that thread, I have a feeling to whatever level the film works will be due to HJK and what she brings. I think the really frustrating thing for us is we HAD a Conan project that looked to be just what we wanted. But due to one person (who is in charge and does make the call), that was wiped out and the slate needed to wiped clean and start from scratch. Supposedly we're not at scratch anymore but have no idea where we are. You see the slate Disney has laid out for two or three years ahead of time. Considering the deal they said they worked out being multi-project oriented, I don't think it'd be too much to have an announcement where they'd go "First up, we have a film by Such & Such dealing with some period in Conan's life. We also have an animated this, that and the other thing that will be this. Finally, we'll have a multi season series dealing with some other thing." I'm just not willing to completely abandon all hope without at least seeing who's working on whatever they have, or hearing Fred say "....yeah....um, they decided not to move forward with anything" (though that would likely be based on whatever time frame they have in the contract).

How long has it been since Netflix picked up Conan? Didn't Amazon sit on it for 2 years and it went to Netflix since they did nothing with it during that period?
If nothing happens at Netflix it might be the same where we won't have to wait more than 2 years to hear about it. Although personally I think they are still going ahead with it. With the Witcher we didn't really hear anything until they were already in development so this might just be a case of us hearing about it way too early and expecting this thing to be made quickly.

I still feel it strange that one person , even the top bod , could nix the Conan series at Amazon. I reckon there might have been more to it we'll ever find out. I've no hate for Amazon , they've put out some great stuff , Man in the High Castle , The Expanse , Hanna , etc. as well as series like The Boys and Invincible that really push the boundaries. As well as original series who can complain about them airing Vikings or Outlander? I've got an even longer list of Netflix stuff I really like too LOL!

September 2020 , at Amazon we at least learned scripts were done and they announced the showrunner between the time it was announced June 2018 at Howard Days and when it was shelved about 4 months later.

There definitely might have been other things behind the scenes we'll never know about (unless someone talks ), it's just more like an Occam's Razor situation. Look at what happened to poor John Carter at Disney when they changed heads. Wheel of Time is definitely working out for Amazon though, have to give them that. I've enjoyed Season One and look forward to see how they can compress the 14+ books into less than 14 seasons. And Lord of the Rings should be good, though there's been some turmoil behind the scenes there.

It's actually making want to go back and play catch up, though I'd want the original covers I saw in the books stores way back when. Then again I have zero time for reading (I missed the last third of Zub's run, that's how little time I have!)
