They should just do something like Elric, there is a woke element to the doomed prince of Melnibone that kinda works for this day and age. Might be ok too if done right. What's woke about Elric? Is it because he struggles with a variety of physical and emotional challenges? Emo-y, yes. Woke, I don't know. I mean the guy killed the two women he loved (or he didn't stop his sword from doing it).

I enjoyed the whole eternal champion thing years ago, not just Elric, but Hawkmoon, Corum and the rest, loved the concept of such a flawed and angst antihero/hero. Just saying that kinda thing works better these days. It's a shame that so many people now, even the Conan fans, find so many aspects about REH's character and world 'rough around the edges' so to speak. Why does everyone need to identify with the protagonists these days !?! The writers and directors need to come out rough and ready, and to hell with anyone taking offense. For instance, if they do a The Frost Giant's Daughter do it right, Conan, in some bewitched delirium, fights and finally butchers Atali's murderous brothers and attempts to rape her. I mean she was a murderous bitch anyway and shit like that happened. What's more shocking, the decapitated brothers or Atali getting raped, at least she gets to walk away from the rape...well maybe, but it never happened anyway. Conan in many ways, roughly speaking, is a gentleman, when it comes to treating women so we can easily see the context in which the above happened.

To be honest, Conan is more a Role Model to me than anything. He's a man's man that always says what he thinks, despises slavery, enjoys life, and respect the value of love and friendship. He is honest to the bone but he can lie if that's gonna save someone's life. He's vital, adventurous and brave and won't stand still when innocent women are about being raped, murdered or tortured. And talking about women, he considers both genders to be equally valid and capable and despite loving sex he don't have to lie or threaten anyone to get laid. He don't care what gods do you pray to and he always choses a heretic over a witch hunter. He is a thief that values gold way less than he values other human beings and a mercenary that would never kill unarmed citizens. He's a scoundrel and a slayer, and yet, far more merciful and moral than the civilized princes and generals of his time. When finally he becomes King, he demonstrates wisdom and a great sense of protectiveness toward his people, making Aquilonia a better place to live. So... just make the show, please. The world NEEDS a character like this.

The world NEEDS a character like this. I hear you, for me, Conan's love for freedom and the despising of slavery always resonated with me from an early time. Cimmerians didn't act the slaves for anyone or take slaves. If there is one thing that this pathetic world needs at the moment its a healthy concept of freedom. A Conan series or a new movie, but we also want it to be done right. I would like to think that although we squabble about the details, that at the heart of it we just want to see REH's Conan, little marred by anything else. And yes, the nihilism and contempt for civilisation as a decadent and decaying thing, they need to translate that somehow.

I'd imagine what Fredrik had to say about the Netflix series woulda been pretty close to what he said at Howard Days in 2018 for the Amazon series.

Llifeless, just waffling on, they looked like they were about to fall asleep, no wonder four years on they are in strife when it comes to realising a Conan series.
They need to read REH's writings, quotes, everything.
“My characters are more like men than these real men are, see. They're rough and rude, they got hands and they got bellies. They hate and they lust; break the skin of civilization and you find the ape, roaring and red-handed.”
― Robert E. Howard
I fear that if REH was around today that they would have cancelled him left, right and center.

I think that pulp characters just have too much competition in this day and age. Every modern author and their brother are trying to get streaming deals these days. Log on to any streaming platform and you would see half a dozen series based on modern day novels. Not to mention streaming services have started fighting over anime tooth and nail (for instance, Bastard!!: Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy at Netflix). There's just too much competition for the old pulp characters to get out of development hell.

When the more anticipated Lord of the Rings project is an anime, you know we've moved into a different era. I'm all for Conan anime at this point if it'll get something onscreen.

It'd be great if we got a Conan anime, it'd have to be a complete Japanese adaptation though for it to work.
