The Witcher was quite expensive to produce but is a big success for Netflix I believe and probably the closest thing on the market right now to a Conan series. Season 3 is currently filming. Some of the most successful episodes imho have been the ones that cleave closest to the original yarns by Sapkowski and feature Geralt in his most iconic role of roving monster hunting Witcher. Not a million miles from a roving adventurer like Conan who wanders the Hyborian Age world and 'loves, fights and battles the supernatural,' as Clyde put it. Conan is the man thing, Witcher by Netflix is aiming at different audience.
It's no wonder it has so many female viewers, at least half or even more. Not just because of Cavill.
I sincerely hope that Conan TV series, if it ever happens, will have no points of contact with Netflix Witcher, neither in terms of PC casting and script, nor in the butchering and making parody of the original material, nor in production design.
I can understand your reservations. The Witcher does have plenty of issues, including PC skewing of the material and some inconsistent and nonsensical writing in a few places. We could discuss some of this in the Witcher thread if you like. One of the main things which they did really well though I thought is the presentation of the Witcher himself Geralt. Cavill is a big fan of the character, takes it seriously and that grounds (almost) every scene that he is in. That was partly why I stressed in my previous post the better (imho) episodes based more closely on the original yarns featuring Geralt as the wandering Witcher. Netflix have reputedly changed their stance recently after declining memberships, increased competition from other streaming platforms, the loss of 700000 subscribers after banning Russia, and a slide in stock value after Elon Musk's tweet about woke programming. How much that will affect their content going forward we shall have to see. But outside of Netflix we still have studios making extremely successful content free of PC programming like Top Gun Maverick, Reacher and Terminal list.

If House of the Dragon triumphs and Rings of Power fails there is a SLIM chance of a Conan show existing AND be good.

If House of the Dragon triumphs and Rings of Power fails there is a SLIM chance of a Conan show existing AND be good. I might be in the minority but I have little interest in prequels in any medium. I think it's because you already know how things turn out. When reading or watching a series I always watch or read in chronological order, and never regret it. That being said, I'll be watching both of these since I have subs to the services. It will be interesting to see how much of an appetite the mainstream public has for things that already happened. But who knows, the Star Wars prequels made a ton of money, despite mixed reviews.

Nowadays we have to unfortunately add "Am I not being beaten over the head with something?" I'm one of those who not only don't care about spoilers, but WANT to know what I'm going to watch, then see how they do it.

I'm one of those who not only don't care about spoilers, but WANT to know what I'm going to watch, then see how they do it. This is one of the ways in which a great writer like Homer shines. His audience for the Iliad were all aware of the salient events of the story, thus surprise was out of the question, but he built tension in a different way. He used his audiences fore knowledge of events to play on their anticipation. They knew what was going to happen but they didn't know exactly when or how things would unfold. This is sometimes called the 'delayed action' method of building tension. The Top Gun trailer in the movies thread I posted awhile back uses a partial variant of this and it's very effective. It's kind of a 'delayed action' plus 'surprise' combo in the Top Gun trailer. Could explain more but don't want to derail the thread.

It has been incredibly difficult finding out info concerning the Conan panel at the SDCC, beyond the new CtB series written by Jim Zub. I managed to find this article online, nothing we really don't know about the Netflix series really. Anyways: Matt Murray and Steve Saffel stated that there is talk of developing a television series for Netflix, but nothing has gone forward any further. No matter what, after 90 years of existing in the fantasy genre, Conan’s legacy will go on, for the greatest Barbarian to ever be written will never give up the fight. The rest of the article: thegameofnerds.com/2022/08/02/sdcc-2022-panel-conan-the-barbarian-90th-anniversary/There's been talk for almost two years, we need ACTION! I guess we have to thank God it wasn't at Warner Brothers...

I've been getting back into wrestling after some time away and I think I found our Conan. Drew McIntyre, the Scottish Warrior.

He's got the right physique. Always thought a highlander style look for Conan or Cimmerians in general would fit the bill.

Yeah, he looks good. More of a working man's body.

Here's what he looks like next to a guy who is more on the "normal" size. Here's before and after pictures of him, he really put on some muscle after he got the ax, then came back.

There's a hard edged demeanour to Charles Bronson that would go down well with the role.
