We should have a Chuck Dixon interview at Midnight's Edge within the next few days. Hopefully, we can find out a little bit more about his future plans concerning the upcoming Conan short stories. Perhaps ME should invite Fredrik too , now that would be fun! LOL

I am currently reading this novella. It's good so far - a pretty standard Conan story. I keep finding typos and other mistakes. For example, Conan is thinking about the fort city of "Vanaheim", but I think he means "Venarium". Also, it's probably supposed to be "dwindling forest" and not "swindling forest". I found a couple others, and I just started chapter 4.
Still, it's a solid Conan tale. I wouldn't expect anything less from Dixon.

I got my copy and have begun reading today. I'm nearly half way through, and I can already say that it is leagues better than Blood of the Serpent. It feels like I'm reading an issue of the classic Savage Sword of Conan magazine, which is not a bad thing at all. In fact, I'm finding to be quite an addictive read. So far this is looking to go down as one the best prose pastiches. The cover is okay in my opinion, though on the back of the book it is in black and white, and it looks more fitting. I eagerly anticipate the future pastiches written by Dixon.

Arkhaven are letting their side down a bit by not getting a knowledgeable editor (or even lore savvy reader) to just give it a final pass before publication (Morgan Holmes for instance). I saw the Hyborian Age referred to as the Hyperborean Age at one point in the marketing - not the sort of thing that a casual reader would notice or care about, but the core fandom would find too many instances of this kind of thing chip away at the sense of authenticity. Not read it myself yet but I'd imagine an old hand like Chuck Dixon has done a great job with the writing and characterisation and any anomalies are hopefully fairly minor in nature.

I finished this book - it was really good. Another typo near the end, referring to the "fug" of smoke and ash - made me chuckle a little. The typos and mistakes are minor. I'm looking forward to the next one.
Maybe "fug" is a word, and not something I say when I don't want to say the other thing.

Haha yeah, it's one of the best/worst examples of divergences between British and US English. I was an English as a Foreign Language teacher for many years and it came up a surprising amount. It turned out a lot of higher level students knew the word from British tv series and films, and I had to explain that while completely acceptable in the UK it almost certainly wouldn't go down well in the US if they tried it there!

Finished. Solid pastiche, but not great. Dixon's prose is good, it's Howardian esque/purple prose. I did feel like the final two chapters could have wrapped up a bit quicker, as the conclusion felt foregone at that point in the story.

I think I'll stick to Dixon's SSoC run.

Just finished with the story and enjoyed it a lot. Dixon's prose was direct and portrays Conan was a clever cutthroat and I really enjoyed that characterization. There are some memorable scenes in this story, the siege initiated by Conan and the mercenaries on the Citadel was action packed, there is cosmic horror as well.
All in all, a solid if conventional Conan tale and the short length makes it feel like a SSOC story.
