insert code here I'm starting this general thread on Grindberg because he deserves one. He is one of the best artists in the Wyeth/Frazetta tradition working today and his choice of subject matter is broad. When his specific Conan project is announced, then I will probably start a separate thread at that time. Tom posted this on FB acouple of days ago: Farewell to New Ilium! Final page of my Tarzan series! After this I am traveling far north to the slopes of Cimmeria!"New Ilium" refers to the lost city that Tarzan finds in the Roy Thomas-scripted digital Tarzan comic. Grindberg has had an incredible run on that which compares well with other classic Tarzan treatments by Foster, Hogarth, Kubert, Buscema and Grell. Tom then revealed that his Tarzan work would be reprinted by DHC and that he was working on a new Conan project for Dark Horse! He also referred to his future adaptation of an actual REH Conan yarn:
My aim is to bring back this character to its original glory from the pulps! Howard deserves no less! It's his vision I'm allowed to play with. His creation is my inspiration! I'd like to reveal which story but thus far everything is in the proposal stage. There is one story in mind but I dont want to jinx it by telling anyone till it materializes.
Deuce, I will bring that feel certainly to the pages so long as Roy Thomas is writing it...which he will. For me it'll be like stepping back in time to when I first started reading Conan back in the 70's. The feel I hope I gave Tarzan I will do no differently for the way I handle Conan! Roy's the only Conan writer I would like to work with. I grew up reading his Conan.... It's only fitting and a self-prophecy of mine to fulfill! I believe it will surpass my run on Tarzan just a notch or 2.
I can't put into words how cool this could be. Obviously, Grindberg is beyond excited about his new project. Finally, here's a great interview with Tom where he talks about getting started in comics, the pulps, Conan and Tarzan: allpulp.blogspot.com/2012/08/artist-tom-grindberg-takes-all-pulp-on.html

This is fantastic news! Roy Thomas and Tom Grindberg on Conan, and adapting an actual REH Conan yarn! If true, it's the best move Dark Horse have made since gaining the rights to Conan. This is great news - the first Conan comic by Dark Horse that I'm genuinely looking forward to, irrespective of the adaptation.
Thank Crom and Tengri.

As long as you avoid the horrific stuff Grindberg did for Marvel in the 90s, I am all for such a thread. His later work is magnificent, but his early stuff for Marvel, much of it stylistically driven by editorial choices not artistic ones is dreadful. This... is a far cry form the beautiful stuff he has been doing that you posted above. -M

It looks like they wanted Tom to ape Mignola, which he just is not suited to. Here's a Conan painting from around '92. A much more natural style for TG:

Yeah, the art and stories in comics during the 90's almost destroyed the comic-book industry. But, I remember how impressed I was by the above cover by Tom Grindberg for Conan the Savage 9. La of Opar Vampirella Oil commission 2012

Yeah, sadly my only exposure to Grindberg then was the mainstream super-hero stuff he did and it turned me off to the point where I avoided his work. A couple years back an associate of mine showed me some of his Tarzan work on the strips you posted an example of above, and it totally blew me away. It was a revelation, and made me reexamine his work and reevaluate my opinion. I've since come to very much appreciate his stuff. SO I very much look forward to seeing more of it here as I seek out collections of his work when I go to shows and shops.

I had a chance to meet him in New Brunswick back around 2000, but wasn't able to get to the shop that day. His Tarzan stuff is amazing and the little bits of Conan up there look terrific too.
Now which story would Roy like another crack at? From what's left, something tells me the Black Stranger since he started doing it but ended up turning it into Treasure of Tranicos.

If I remember correctly Gil Kane initially did/could not complete the artwork for The Black Stranger. By the time John Buscema was assigned to complete the adaptation Marvel had acquired the rights to Decamp's Treasure of Tranicos, how unfortunate. I'd love to see Roy Thomas finally adapt The Black Stranger.

Don't forget Mitra and Tarim! ;-) I have to agree. After 4 decades, Roy remains the preeminent adapter of REH Conan yarns. Grindberg obviously has the talent, style, background and passion for the project. We won't see any "unicorn helms" or "barista Conans" from Tom. Nor will we see any ridiculous obviously-contradictory-to-REH crap thrown in by RT. Maybe we need to do a write-in campaign to DHC to make them realize that there is solid fan support behind this? Can't hurt. Does anyone have contact info for the editor of the Conan comics?

Looking at the most recent issue, it appears that Aaron Walker is the editor for 'Conan the Slayer.' I have yet to find any contact details, I do not even know if Aaron Walker is the best guy to contact. I was wondering about the best way around this. Would it be better for us to individually contact DHC and show our approval of the Thomas/Grindberg team? or should we write-up a well-worded statement approving the proposal and have forum members sign-up?

So we'll wait a while longer! Terry

So we'll wait a while longer! Terry Terry, you run the "REH Comics Group". If you don't know who to contact at DHC as far as voicing support for the Thomas/Grindberg project, who would?

As far as voicing support for the project I'd guess , until we know otherwise if it'll be a different editor , Aaron Walker would probably the guy to contact. Terry
