Terry Alas, I was a few years too late, and had to wait for the B/W British reprints to work their way through the stories. I did get the DC comics that he worked on, but his work was a bit hit-or-miss at that time. I've read that DC never really committed to him or gave his work the support it deserved. ...... Jack ran into issues almost right away at DC as the editors didn't like they way he drew Superman's face and had other artists associated with Superman (I believe it was Murphy Anderson but I am having a memory cramp on the the artists involved) redraw Superman's face on the covers where Jack used him. It started things off on the wrong foot for him at DC; he had left Marvel to go to because he felt underappreciated there and unable to do the things he wanted the way he wanted to there, and right off the bat at DC he was having problems with them changing his work. -M

Surprised no one's mentioned Etrigan The Demon yet. Definitely my favorite Kirby character hands down. Throw The Hulk, Dr. Strange & Arthurian Mythology in a blender & this is what you get. Love this character

It's really disheartening to see Marvel sidelining Kirby's Fantastic Four, the team and book that changed how comics were made, over a corporate feud over movie rights. I can't think of another group of fictional characters more ill-treated in recent memory.

I can't think of another group of fictional characters more ill-treated in recent memory. If they had actually been selling in the current market, they wouldn't have been sidelined, but saleswise the FF has been a marginal title for a couple of decades now. The same feud encompasses the X-Men, but the X-Men still sell well enough to not be sidelined. If sales on FF had been robust, there would still be an FF book despite the feud. -M

MRP, mebbe start up a thread in this section with a few of your key points and see if we can't iron out some of the issues. That's something I'd like to discuss too. There are many factors involved.

We've got such a thread now: swordsofreh.proboards.com/thread/550/decline-american-comic-industry?page=1&scrollTo=14021This is a huge topic and one which impacts the entire (American) industry. Plenty there for its own thread. Meanwhile, getting back to Jack... Here's a rejected Kirby Thor cover later inked by Mike Royer:

I can't think of another group of fictional characters more ill-treated in recent memory. I feel like a lot of writers get hung up on the family angle and don't emphasize enough that it should be a book about exploration and really big, cosmic ideas. Yeah, they're a family and all, but fighting the same rogues gallery over and over neuters the book even more than most comics. I also think that, going in hand with the exploratory themes, it's a book that should put bold, imaginative art very much in the forefront and artists of the caliber needed to make such a book work are rare. Kind of the same problem Dr. Strange has always had.

I'm not as bothered because the 4 DID get a good end to their story in the secret wars event (Doom also finally lets go of his hatred of Reed and becomes a hero). They didn't just have "rocks fall everyone dies" instead they gave the story an epic conclusion in their biggest event ever (and secret wars REALLY was a big one)
