When Aaron first got the job he posted an image of all the Ace/Lancer Conan paperbacks... his writing shows those are his biggest influences as far as Conan goes. He later corrected that he has the Del Rey's....he should have read them...

Yeah, I agree. I also think the Aztec-like civilisation could of been invaded by northern barbarians loosely based on the Na-Dene (Atapaskan) peoples. I dislike the idea of the greedy gold-loving c onquistadors of Acheron, it's just so predictable and boring - it is set in the Hyborian Age, not in the 16th century. I find the location of the Uto-Aztecan and the Na-Dene peoples fascinating and I could imagine some incredible battles between their ancestors in the Hyborian Age. Sorry, I love these maps: Here's the map of the Uto-Aztecans A battle between the ancestors of these two peoples woulda made more sense than the easterners from Acheron. Actually some theories talking how maybe the Chinese and what we call todya "vikings" interac with the Aztecs have started to appear more and more, there is a mexican animated movie about an aztec princess and a viking warrior meet together to save the world is about to be released. All nonsense, just like Gavin Menzies' book 1421: The Year China Discovered the World. There were interactions between Chinese merchants and pirates and Christianized Aztecs in South-East Asia, along with Japanese mercenaries in the 16th Century - The Lost Samurai: Japanese Mercenaries in South East Asia, 1593–1688. There were also Ottoman Turks or their vassals, Dutch, English, Portuguese and Spanish fighting over the Spice Islands. The Spanish brought over many Mexicans into the Philippines and their decedents are still there.

He later corrected that he has the Del Rey's....he should have read them... Yeah, I kinda hoped he woulda kept to the Del Rey editions or at least respected the Roy Thomas run. You could kinda tell early on he was on the wrong track with Conan befriending the Picts between Beyond the Black River & the Black Stranger (CTB 2). Aaron completely changed Conan's first encounter with prince Yezdigerd of Turan - no scar or Siege of Makkalet (CtB 6). He acknowledged the terrible Tini Howard Belit mini series instead of the Roy Thomas run (CtB 7). ...and this new King Conan series is just re-imagining DeCamp's Conan of the Isles.

mmm how we changed from the wierd island to this.... Part of the flashback they've been doing , some of this was shown in #3. Starting to feel I'm seeing the same story in every issue.

Just read this issue. The majority of pages are devoted to the flashback with Conan and Prince Conn. Thoth-Amon and Conan become allies and Princess Mataoka is now Princess Prima:

Calling her Princess Prima is offending me no end. I mean this is an afront to the respected memory of the native American ballerina Maria Tallchief, one of the most famous celebrated Native American women of the 20th century, how dare they do this to her. Tallchief was the first American dancer in the history of ballet to earn international fame. In 1951 Time magazine hailed her as the Osage prima ballerina. The Osage are an American Indian tribe from Oklahoma. Time for Aaron to cough up more dough.

So it took Conan three quarters of an issue to beat up a kid , the rest Conan and Thoth wandering round that island again.
