So it took Conan three quarters of an issue to beat up a kid , the rest Conan and Thoth wandering round that island again. Unfortunately, it's the other way round, Conn beats Conan!

How sad... most people here don't seem to like this saga. I just read this issue and I really enjoyed it.

Some very good reviews for this issue: KING CONAN #4
By and large, this King Conan issue is the most heartwrenching and beautiful one yet—which is really saying something, given previous installments of the series. This chapter juxtaposes Conan's current fight with an incredibly personal altercation with his son, one that unfolds in a gorgeous and truly epic fashion. What Jason Aaron, Mahmud Asrar, and company are doing with this series deserves all of the praise possible—and it also deserves the attention of any and all Conan fans. -- Jenna Anderson
Rating: 5 out of 5comicbook.com/comics/news/new-comic-reviews-dc-marvel-image-may-11-2022/#3KING CONAN #4, from Marvel Comics on May 11th, 2022, reveals the final moments between King Conan and his son, Conn, before they parted. Will a father’s hard lesson for his son bear the fruit he desires?
Was It Good?
KING CONAN #4 is the latest success for this series and another feather in the cap of Jason Aaron. This is a great story from cover to cover.
You’d think having an issue that’s almost all dialog and two key action scenes would be boring or at least boring for a Conan comic, but you’d be incorrect in this case. Aaron wisely does what every comic writer should be doing – tell the story through the action.
Here, we get a snippet of a scene involving (former) King Conan escaping the clutches of Princess Prima on the Isle of Death, but most of the issue shows the final moments between father and son before Conan departed his country. Why or how Conan left his home wasn’t clear until now, but there were hints from the prior issues that something terrible happened to cause him to leave. Here, Aaron pulls a bait-and-switch that works in context. the switch is as gratifying as it is heartbreaking, and it adds a strong note to Conan’s mythology.
The switch comes through an unexpected sword battle. You don’t see it coming right away, but when it hits, it makes all the sense in the world. This is layered, emotional storytelling at its best.
Likewise, the art by Asrar, Wilson, and Lanham is exceptional in this issue. Again, the story is told through both the words and the actions in the panel. You can see the art teams using the sword strokes and flying bodies to punctuate the emotional beats as Conan struggles with the choices he makes.
What’s It About?
We begin with the end of the last meeting between King Conan and Prince Conn as the young prince is banished from the kingdom until he learns the ways of the world. King Conan is adamant that a sheltered life brought up in a protected castle has left Conn too soft to ascend to the throne. Conn, however, won’t leave without a fight.
Now, Princess Prima orders Thoth-Amon and Conan thrown into the Maw of Nails. As the red apes approach to do the deed, wizard and warrior fight for their lives, escaping down the nearby tunnels. After a short while, the duo pauses and declares a grudging truce to aid each other until they can escape the island.
Previously, Conn draws his sword, determined to defy King Conan’s order of banishment. We conclude the issue with recordkeeping, a recognition that a king’s role is to serve, and the acceptance of banishment.
Final Thoughts
KING CONAN #4 is an outstanding entry in the series for the way Aaron answers the mystery of Conan’s departure from home and what it means for the future of his kingdom. The dialog is poignant, the action is powerful, and the art team elevates the story even further in every panel with fantastic art.
Score: 9.5/10 ★★★★★★★★★★comicalopinions.com/king-conan-4-review/King Conan #4: All I Am is Scar and Bone

Review
Writing
Conan is a character and book that I like having around, I do not read or keep up with all the stories, but I enjoy that it is there. Everyone once in a while I will get that “itch” to dig into some Conan. You know, when you want some sword and sorcery in your life. You want a little “crush your enemies. See them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their women.” Type story telling in your life. I don’t want to read it all the time, but I got that Conan itch and King Conan #4 was there to scratch it!
Jason Aaron has been writing Conan since Marvel got the right to the title a few years back and has been crushing it with some spectacular storytelling. Aaron gets the “voice” of the Conan stories to a “t”. It bleeds through the dialogue and the adventure he goes on. Aaron just plain and simply gets Conan and the type of storytelling he needs.
In all fairness as I stated previously I do not always keep up with Conan the Barbarians exploits I pop in and out quite often so King Conan #4 is the first issue I have read in a while and this will attest to what an exquisite writer Jason Aaron is, I had no problems jumping in on the 4th issue of this ongoing story. Aaron gives the reader enough information (plus a small recap page) to get all you need to enjoy the story.
I immensely enjoyed the battle between Conan and his son. Some truly touching dialogue from Aaron between the two and he has some hard hitting notes between the father and son. It also ends in a surprising way that I absolutely loved and rang true for Conan and the story being told, Aaron did a tremendous job in the way it played out through the issue.
Aaron also does an incredible job of flashing back and forth between the present day story of being trapped on this island with his old enemy Thoth-Amon and the flashback story of his battle with his son. Wonderful pacing for the story and letting each build upon one another.
Art
You know it is going to be a good Conan comic when Mahmud Asrar is on art duties. My man has the aesthetics of Conan down perfectly. He is a barbarian, a man among men, the ultimate warrior and Asrar catches all of that. But Asrar also catches the whole emotional range of Conan, especially this older “King Conan” version of the character. Asrar does an incredible job of capturing the integral aspects of King Conan’s emotions as he battles his own son. Asrar does some magnificent visual story telling throughout their battle.
As much as I love emotional storytelling and it is truly the heart of the story being told, it ain’t Conan book without some swords, fighting, monsters, and blood. Luckily Asrar has got all that handled as well. Asrar’s visuals are teeming with energy, there is a delightful sense of movement throughout he still images and some wonderful sequential visual story telling through the fights. Great sense of impact and weight as well.
Asrar does not skimp on the detail either in King Conan #4. His pages and panels are fully brought together with some fantastic world and story setting background detail throughout the issue. I love open field visual of the battle ground between King Conan and son.
Speaking of that open field battleground my gosh Matthew Wilson’s colors are just splendid in it. The field has s beautiful “golden” look to it as Sting would say. The golden field coupled with the fall tempered leaves floating in throughout serves as a stunning visual setting for the battle of father against son. Matthew Wilson captures the elegance of it all superbly well.
Final Thoughts
This team has been doing Conan together for a long time and whenever they are all together the book shines. Great writing and beautiful art that captures exactly everything you would want from a Conan book. I am not the biggest “Conan fan” but every once in a while I want me some hard hitting Conan and King Conan delivers that and more!

There is a clear improvement in both art and writing in the King Conan run from what I've seen. Not to say the art was bad in the first place but the writing still doesn't feel too "Conan" to me. Bit I concede I might be biased towards the Roy Thomas SSOC stories. At least Conan isn't going around befriending picts in a forced sequel to Beyond the Black River that absolutely nobody asked for

Good interaction and story between Conan and Conn , really don't see why Conan and Thoth are wandering round the island after four issues. Art was good , but not quite as good overall as usual , perhaps time constraints with the problems they've had. A couple of film references IIRC that I was disappointed with but overall probably the best issue so far.Not sure about the Princess' new name but nice to see another Venom symbiote LOL!

Just read the 4th issue, not bad.
we get to see the origin of Thoth. I like the scene with him at the bar after reacquiring the Serpent Ring from Pheonix on the Sword.
I gotta feeling Conan will die in the next issue.

TBH I don't think we needed another Thoth origin story , apart from the interaction between Conan and Conn last issue it's been a bit of a bore fest with Conan wandering round the island. Writing wise it has seemed really lazy to me , the only bright spot has been Asrar's artwork. Roll on whatever CPI decides to do next.

Well, just in time for the last time they did a Thoth origin to match up with Obi Wan and Anakin...

It's a thin story that could have been told in two issues. And yeah, I am finding it boring as well. Didn't like that Conn won the fight against Conan, them hugging in a field of flowers seemed overly dramatic...kind of contrived as well.
