Again, why do they insist on going down this route? Just say you wanted to do something different and leave it there. It’s like they can’t seem to help themselves. To paraphrase Michael Jordan, white people watch TV too. Yeah, that could have been worded better hehe. It's funny, cause if you look at the cast, it mostly "a bunch of white people" with some other races sprinkled in here and there.

Oh dear, that ott comment does make it sound like Ryan Condal has been radicalised. Wonder how much of that is a reaction to why Conan was dropped by Amazon. Sure hope that 'tude isn't reflected in the writing. If the characters start mouthing shallow contemporary PC platitudes I'll be outta there faster then Maverick in an F-14. Apart from the PC retconning of the Velaryons it does sound like they're trying to make the changes as organically as possible in terms of worldbuilding. The change didn't bother me because I've not read the books and am unfamiliar with the lore. So long as it's well produced, well written and well acted I'll give it a shot.

Here's what looks to be a very accurate summation from Andre at Midnight's Edge:
Game of Thrones prequel 'House of the Dragon’ goes full woke!

Well I think we can all let out a deep breath. Any fears we had of the current era watering down the show did not appear to have taken place, at least in the first episode.
Congratulations, Amazon, you let these guys WALK! No, worse, you PUSHED them out! They damn well better hope these two new guys can pull magic out of their you know where. I do not envy them with what they have before them. This episode just made their lift that much heavier. Wheel of Time is nowhere in this league. At least for one episode, it reminded us of the better parts of GoT (sometimes with blatant fan service, but you gotta do what you gotta do).
Jenn, you effed up...big time.

I agree it was a very good start. We’ll see how the show progresses. If it continues to be as good as the first episode and Netflix ends up passing on Conan letting their license to the rights expire, I hope HBO buy the rights and let Ryan do a Conan show next. That’ll be a long wait, but I think we have a few years wait until a Conan show anyway.

I enjoyed the first episode. A few years back I was really into the lore but kind of faded out when it became obvious GRRM wasn't going to finish the series, but enjoyed seeing portions of the Fire & Blood sourcebook (or was it the World of Ice & Fire, I forget) brought to life last night.
I stayed away from articles about this series so I had no idea Matt Smith was playing Daemon and this was going to cover the Dance of Dragons. Boy can GRRM name blades, Darksister is a great name for a sword.
I enjoyed Condal's comments at the end of the episode, too. Boy I bet it's a burr in Malberg's ass they missed out on this guy due to that damn regime change.
This is going to be a big hit, I think. Glad I have something to watch Sunday nights again.
Michael Moorcock should be smiling somewhere, though, too. Elric can be done.

Thought episode 1 was very well produced. Great scenery, great costumes, armour, weapons, writing and direction. A little slow, since most of it was introducing the characters and initial set up, but that's to be expected for a 1st episode.
The standout character both for the acting and in complexity of character was Daemon Targaryen played by Matt Smith, followed by King Viserys. But all the actors were great, most just don't have as much complexity of character to convey at this introductory point in the narrative. So far missing the humour of Tyrion or the wit of a character like Varys.
The dragon cgi is still very good, GoT in general seems to have one of the best portrayal of dragons ever seen on screen imho.
The music by Ramin Djawadi is outstanding, as it was in GoT, though we don't get much of it in this episode.
The only really potentially controversial scene from a PC perspective is probably the birth scene, but I don't want to go into details here since it would mean dropping spoilers.
Shad Brooks provides quite a good overview of the points involved on his Knight's Watch channel:
Warning: the vid contains spoilers for House of the Dragon Episode 1
So far I'm looking forward to the next episode and hope they won't pull a bait and switch.

Yep, the birthing scene did cause an issue in some circles. It’s Game of Thrones, what do you expect?!?

The usual caterwauling: Look at how they treat women!!! This is worse than what happened to Sansa!!! It'll be forgotten by next week.

Though it was pretty rough and it did remind me to thank the missus for everything she went through for our two 😅
