GRRM has been making the rounds to promote this "new" book Rise of the Dragon that's really just repackaged/rewritten material from Fire & Blood into a more traditional source book/reference style. He wanted to start even earlier in the Targaryen reign, but no one else went for it. Here's GRRM with more info on Winds. If his publishers didn't have the "new" book coming out, I guarantee you they'd make him split Winds into two books. They still might if he doesn't finish in the next two years. Thanks for posting those Jason.

Possible cover leak... It's by an official artist but still not confirmed.

Possible cover leak... It's by an official artist but still not confirmed. So three quarters of the way done...500 pages to go...Do we really think we're going to get a 2000 page novel? I see 1200 as the upper limit. So does that mean two volumes once they know it's really finally done? Looks like a good cover if it ends up being the one.

The publishers will force him to publish what he has by the end of 2024. Whatever he hasn't completed they'll roll it over into the final book.

This poses a conundrum for me. I read the first three books and enjoyed them but ended up dropping midway through Feast for Crows. He lost me with introducing too many more characters and I think I remember getting really bored. The show was good up to season 5 for me then I dropped it too. In short, never really had closure with this series. If Winds of Winter is actually going to happen and is hopefully I major departure from the shows storyline, I may just skip to it and give it a go.

Dance with Dragons is certainly better than Crows. Somehow when he did his split he managed to leave the more interesting characters in Dragons.

While I still enjoyed Crows, A Dance with Dragons was much better. In the meantime, if anyone is interested in a related book, I very highly recommend Fire & Blood, the very bloody history of the Targaryen dynasty. I'm most of the way through that book now and really loving it.

Winds of Winter isn't the last book of series, either, so if you're thinking "I'll skip to the end and just read that!" then, odds are you'll still be left wanting (and, probably in line for a multi-year wait for the actual last book...)

I think Bone's just going to skip Crows and Dragons, pick up the story with Winter, go from there and hope the story will be different from the show. The book is supposed to begin with I believe the battle of Slaver's Bay led by Barrister Selmy, who's dead in the show by that point so it'll already be different right from the start. Martin needs to wrap it up already, make Dream of Spring a 300 page epilogue to WoW. That doesn't sound like what he's thinking though. He is following in Tolkien's footsteps, he keeps getting distracted from the main story by all these other smaller aspects of the world he created, focuses on those then remembers he still has to go back to the main story.

Yup, that would be my plan.
I still say that the show should have never resurrected John Snow. When Castle Black was overrun, he should have became a White Walker, challenged the leader, won and led the White Walkers to conquer Westeros. The last scene should have been after killing Cercie and changing her into a walker, Danaries saying "F this" and flying back to Dothrak with a trail of dragon piss in her wake.

Well for all we know that MAY be how it turns out But I think Jon's somehow resurrection is part of Martin's plan (Chekov's gun-you don't have a character that basically just resurrects himself and NOT have that involved). Even though he told David & DB what his general plans were, he didn't seem to thrilled with the execution (he wasn't alone) and said there were a lot of differences between the show and the (eventual) books.

Ryan SO fell up! Thanks again Jen.
I’d actually heard of the Hedge Knight stories way before I heard of GoT. Could finally be something a little more light hearted.

Good job hiring her, Jeff. This should be really cool. I read the first novella and it was basically a Knight's Tale. Should be good.

A sad update from GRRM, he's still at the same page count as a year ago: screenrant.com/game-thrones-winds-winter-release-progress-update-george-martin/He needs to release what he has of Winds, then write a tight Dream of Spring with a coauthor if there is any chance of him finishing this before the Stranger beckons him. Sad, but true. He's 75. There's not enough time to finish Winds and A Dream of Spring at this point. Winds may not come out by 2025, he'll be 77. The last book will easily put him into his 80s.
