Didn't GRRM say something similar about GoT? With HBO's budget cuts for the show they're just not going to have time to handle anything outside the major characters and plotlines.

I can't remember him coming out like this with the original GoT series. With the books he has an unlimited budget, and he's a TV veteran, so he has to know how budgets work, etc... from his Beauty & the Beast tv series days. Back during the Game of Thrones early days he was still not a mainstream name, so he didn't have the clout he has now. Still, some of the decisions they made with combining Nettles with Rhaena... not a wise move.

I seem to recall there was a point where the TV series was beginning to catch up with the novels and GRRM remarked about some of the storylines and characters they were skipping from the books. My memory could be faulty though.
It's a common technique to combine characters in adaptations, but it can be controversial to those who like the characters from the original material. One example was in The Expanse where they folded three characters from the books into one. It worked fine for the TV show though, and that case the original authors were heavily involved in the scripting and on board with the changes.

I think he was disappointed about Lady Stoneheart and Victarion, but I’d have to double check. The show could’ve run at least 8 full 10 episode seasons if they were included. And that’s not even counting the lost Targaryen we still have to deal with in WoW.

Looks like George is going to do another post airing his grievances. Wow, he must really be upset.

I gotta say though that I think that Dan and Dave did awesomely adapting the books they did have, and that it must have been a real curveball for them and the writers under them to have run out of original material to work from. It is often beyond difficult to capture the nuances of another writers characters, especially in a work of this size and complexity. I can't help but feel that GRRM was hedging a little because of the pressure on him to finish the books when the TV series got so popular. I think that some of that pressure and the many distractions arising from it knocked GRRM out of the headspace (or zone) he needed to be in to write the stuff. In some ways creatively I feel he might be a victim of his own success in that regard.

Thanks Jason - a little spoileriffic for those who haven't read the book, though he does give due warning.
