I hope this cover's no indication of what to expect from Marvel's rendition of the Cimmerian next year.

A few words by Roy concerning the upcoming Conan Omnibus editions at Marvel:
From Roy Thomas
January will see the release of the first of a half-dozen big hardcover volumes from Marvel reprinting my Conan work from the 1970s--as I understand it, three volumes each reprinting CONAN THE BARBARIAN and THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN. (I presume my #1-8 of KING CONAN will follow somewhere-or-other later.) This first volume--complete with a "parental advisory" because it kinda pushed the Comics Code limits of the day--runs something like 800 pages for $125... with 150 pages of that being "extras"--rejected or unused covers and artwork by main artist Barry Windsor-Smith (then Barry Smith), text pieces, ads, and even mainstream/SF John Jakes' original synopsis for the "Web of the Spider God" issue of CTB.
Besides CONAN THE BARBARIAN #126 and all the extras, the book also reprints the Starr the Slayer tale from CHAMBER OF DARKNESS #4 which was a sort of unintended tryout by Barry and me of a Conan-style character... and two b&w stories from SAVAGE TALES whose color versions also appear in the volume. Besides Jakes' and my work, there's also the Elric/Conan story plotted by Michael Moorcock and Jim Cawthorn... and artwork by not just Barry but also Gil Kane and John Buscema. The regular edition of the book sports a new cover by John Cassady, while the variant edition is headed by Barry's cover for CTB #1. Me, I'd have used a Smith cover on BOTH editions, but Cassady's art is a fine tribute to Barry's work.
Best set aside a nice spot on your shelf for these six big volumes to come out in the next year or so now that Marvel has picked up the rights to Conan again. Lots of beautiful artwork by the above artists plus Neal Adams, Tony DeZuniga, Alfredo Alcala, Ernie Chan, Frank Brunner, and many others in these six books--from a time when CONAN THE BARBARIAN and SAVAGE SWORD contained such of the greatest artwork then being published in comics.
Best wishes, Roy

Common sense seems to have prevailed and we're only getting the Smith pin-up from #22, rather than the full reprint of #1. Also good to get both colour and B&W of FGD and The Dweller In The Dark - I assume the colour version of the latter story will remain censored, and maybe The Song Of Red Sonja, too. ...... According to the preview pages they've included a letter from the Comics Code Authority concerning the FGD, maybe they'll include the material from Marvel Treasury Edition #15 in a similar way? link: www.collectededitions.com/marvel/omnibus/ctb_omni01.html

Ishtar's Earlobes, did you read the letter from that Minion of the Comics Code? Is there anything more infuriating than the niggling priggery of a censor?
God forbid anybody might gaze upon a pen and ink illustration of a fictional character and see a couple dots of ink representing a nipple. Aargh. Words fail me.

This volume looks like it will be worth every cent, if you can get the Barry Smith cover. I have heard rumours, not sure how true, that the Barry Smith covers selling out very quickly and the John Cassaday covers are being discounted. I do not like to be negative, but the Cassaday cover looks bloody awful (which is surprising for this artist), and for a volume like this, you wouldn't want that cover. I would rather pay the extra.

If you haven't pre-ordered the BWS cover from a comic shop you'll be unlikely to get it now without paying over the odds on Ebay or somesuch.

I have only seen one copy of this at the Comic-shops (Forbidden Planet) in London. To my disgust it was the Cassaday cover, they had 4 copies (2 with the BWS cover) for sale and only one remaining within 45 minutes of opening the store. They'll probably get the Cassaday one back in stock again, but I can't bring myself to pay over £100 for a book with a cover like that.

Just take the cover off and burn it LOL I did consider it. Thinking back on it, I should of picked it up, I always take off the cover when I read the omnibus style books and eventually damage or lose the covers anyway.

I picked up the Omnibus with the Cassaday cover today. It's a beautifully crafted book with loads of extras - I've finished reading the 12 page intro by Roy Thomas and the Starr the Slayer story from the Chamber of Darkness.
I'll make sure I pre-order the Neal Adams cover for the 2nd volume.

Supposition is it’s Spurlock. Seems to have gone just a bit overboard. I hope the BWS recolored issues are available at some point but that doesn’t detract from this volume. They could be included in an Epic for example or a separate book altogether. One 1000 page book can’t include everything. It also seems they left the censored panel in Dwelller in the Dark in the B&W version instead of the uncensored one. Oh well...

I think they have included the censored panel from the ST version on pages 702-3 of the omnibus (Savages Tales 4/Conan the Barbarian 12, Comic Codes Authority Alterations)
